i really like the concept, but i've never seen one in non-plastic, and i hate plastic dinnerware. well, "hate" -- not with the passion of a thousand suns going nova, you know. just -- ew. not in my mouth.

*googles*. oh wow, there is actually a titanium spork!

and this picture is worth 200 words or so. this one leaves me speechless.

proto spork for those who just like to shovel it in.

If there's an REI near you, they've usually got the titanium spork in stock.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] gothtique makes sporks from old sterling and stainless tableware and sells them here: http://www.picklepot.com/?page_id=54

hey, cool idea to recycle old tableware!

i am not sure they're very functional as the fork part goes; the tines don't look stabby enough. eg. they look good for serving salad, but not for eating it.

hmm. i have some old tableware i hate, and a dremel. this might just call for experimentation.

The only problem with sporks is that they have very short tines. They keep putting a spork in my take-away salad, but the tines are not long enough to spear any lettuce - it's very frustrating.

part of the problem is that the plastic is slidey and bendy. i do wonder whether one couldn't design a decent metal one.

The tines are also usually triangular on the plastic ones, which in combination with the shortness means that they form a pretty wide angle, so when they spear things the things just fall off.

I suspect that making the gaps between the tines substantially more U-shaped (possibly even with bits of square bottom) with straight sides so that the tines have a significant -- even if only 6mm long or so -- section with parallel sides would help that substantially.

Edit: The titanium one linked to in the original post looks a bit better about this, but only a bit.

Yes! Completely useless for salads - I don't know why the company includes them.

ah yes, that's the problem now that i've looked at them closely. will take that into account when/if experimenting.

the type 1 spork (as i call it), the ones that just have a fork at one end and a spoon at the other, don't have that problem. but i don't like those as much because they don't really allow the use of both during the same meal.

Titanium table ware has the unfortunate property of being hard enough to score many ceramics.

So while I really like the Ti KFS I have, it's not something to use on the good dishes.

since they make it for backpackers, they probably expect it to not be used on ceramics. but yeah, that's a good point, and something i hadn't thought of.

I keep my titanium spork in the case with my titanium chopsticks. Amazingly useful on trips, especially in China.
