ok, i am all exhausted from writing in snigglers. let's do a survey.

1. What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now?
ivory for the paramour; i don't use soap.

2. Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
not this week.

3. Is there anything moldy in your refrigerator?
oh, probably. lemme check. some moldy orange cheddar (which is IMO the best thing to happen to it), and some liquifying broccoli. probably something else in containers way in the back.

4. Are there any dirty dishes in your sink?
yup. big pile in the right sink. couple pots in the left sink. that annoys me, so i'll go wash them when i am done with this. only the pots in the left sink annoy me though. i like to have one sink free.

5. What would you change about your living room?
have more walls in another accessible dimension, for more books. also, self-cleaning carpet would be nice.

6. Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty?
what is this "dishwasher" of which you speak?

7. Do you have a can of mushrooms in your pantry?
unfortunately not. i need to buy a flat. yes, i like canned mushrooms.

8. White or wheat bread?
store-bought wheat, and a slice of asiago-topped ciabatta. right now that is. i bake a lot of bread.

9. What is on top of your refrigerator?
a huge can of fake cocoa mix, some fruit bars left from last year's trip to farthing party, a lamp (for the fluorescent above the counter is burned out), a fledgling cissus (plant), a pack of tamarinds, 3 pretty bottles i can't bear to toss, a can of ultra-strength RAID (with which the paramour murdered the wasps last year), a bag of cat treats, the small box into which we toss all receipts, a solid layer of dust.

10. What color is your sofa?
it's a futon; the frame is pine, the mattress is black.

11. What color or design is on your shower curtain?
bright multi-coloured funky cats on a clear base.

12. How many plants are in your home?
one, all of the rest are outside.

13. How many candles are in your home?
hundreds. mostly tealights, but also others, including pillars.

14. Is your bed made right now?
i don't make beds. and i don't actually have a bed. i sleep on a thermarest camping mattress on the floor.

15. If you have a coffee pot, what color is it?
clear glass with black handle and lid (it's a french press).

16. Electric or standard can opener?
standard. well, "standard". it's actually GOOD, not crappy, like standard ones.

17. Theme in your living room?
theme? *heh*. yo, russ, what's our "theme" would you say?

18. Colors in the bedroom?
the paramour's room is egg-yolk yellow. mine is panelled in dark wood.

19. Comet or Soft Scrub?
melamine sponge.

20. Is your closet organized?
i don't even have a closet. it's an open home-built (not by me) wardrobe with a curtain in front. it's semi-organized, but in disorder.

21. What color is the flashlight that you use the most?
bright white halogen. (i saw someone write "black". what use is a black light, i ask you? :)

22. What kinds of things are in your junk drawer?
junk. be serious! i don't actually have a junk drawer. every drawer is a bit junky to make up for that. :)

23. Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home?
glass for me (or straight out of the bottle), plastic for the paramour.

24. Do you have iced tea made in a pitcher right now?
no. this has been an unusually cool summer, or i would. and it would be red zinger with lemon.

25. If you have a garage, is it cluttered?
no garage, but if we did it would be cluttered. probably too cluttered to actually drive the truck in.

26. Curtains or blinds?
miniblinds in the living room, curtains in the egg room, nothing in the kitchen, bath, and my room.

27. How many pillows do you sleep with?
two.

28. Do you sleep with any lights on at night?
when i fall asleep while reading. not on purpose.

29. How many ceiling fans are in your home?
none.

30. How often do you vacuum?
when the cat hair starts to really annoy me. or company is coming.

31. Standard toothbrush or electric?
standard.

32. What color is your toothbrush?
white with teal bits.

33. Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch?
we have no front porch. we have a mat, but it doesn't say "welcome". it's brown cocos. with tulips (it was cheap, not bought for the design).

34. What is in your oven right now?
one oven rack. burnt-on food. possibly a cookie sheet with a silicone mat.

35. Is your microwave clean or dirty?
not as dirty as it could be, but also not squeaky clean.

36. Is there anything under your bed?
since i have no bed, no. if i had a bed, there'd be clutter under it, and dust bunnies.

37. Chore you hate doing the most?
vacuuming. i hate the sound. i rather clean the toilet, which i also don't actually _like_.

38. What retro items are in your home?
retro. oy. you're implying some sort of fashion sense here in general, aren't you?

39. Do you have a separate room that you use as an office?
no; the living room and my room both function partly as office space. since we both work and play on computers it's really inseparable.

40. If you have a yard, who mows it?
i weedwhack it. occasionally. right now it's a jungle. the cats love it.

41. Is there anything on your kitchen floor right now?
spilled, you mean? or lying on it? there are the garbage can, the cat food bin, the recycling bin, but those belong there. and the soda bottles around the recycling bin, but they belong there. and the cat dishes, but they also belong there. so there's nothing random lying on it. it's not clean, though; it needs washing.

42. How many mirrors are in your home?
*urm*. mirrors. i think 3. yeah. one behind the door in the bathroom which i hardly ever see, and two small ones on the medicine cabinets.

43. Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home?
yes. also probably lost emergency money. which is always fun to find years later.

44. What color are your walls?
mostly wood panelling. a dingy white in the bathroom.

45. Which rooms in your house have wallpaper?
none.

46. Do you have a peephole in your front door?
the entire front door is a peephole. (it's a sliding double-glass patio door.)

47. Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home?
would you also like to know exactly WHERE i am keeping my emergency money? :) i have a knife in my bedroom, and i know how to use it. (if you resemble a salmon, i will fillet you expertly.)

48. What does your home smell like right now?
cats and sulphur? i don't actually know since i live here. it doesn't smell of anything special, like apple pie or whatever realtors tell you to make it smell like when you're trying to sell.

49. Fave candle scent?
beeswax. i don't like most artificial scents.

50. What kind of pickles (if any) are in your refrigerator right now?
garlic-n-dill.

51. Who are in the pictures you displayed?
pictures i do what with? i keep my pictures on my computer. there's a large picture of a tree with ice on it in the living room. and a picture of a wizard casting a spell (really nice light in that). no pictures of real people are displayed.

52. What color is your favorite bible?
my favourite what? *laugh*.

53. Do you have plenty of cabinet space in your kitchen?
not enough. i keep the pantry in my room because the kitchen is badly designed.

54. Do you own a stereo?
more than one.

55. How many tvs do you have?
one. which these days only gets turned on for watching rented movies and anime.

56. How many house phones?
two, one of which is out of batteries.

57. Do you have a housekeeper?
hahahahahahahahahahhahhahahaa!

58. What style do you decorate in?
you have read this survey so far, haven't you? take a guess. "early student housing" is probably a good description.

59. Do you like solid colors in furniture or prints?
solid colour with texture that gives it shades.

60. Is there a smoke detector in your home?
several. without batteries.

61. In case of fire, what are the items you would grab if you only could make one quick trip?
the jump bag i used to have ready and packed. oh ghod. i am so bad now. i'd probably grab the laptop, the external backup drive, and my backpack which ought to have my wallet and stuff in it.

62. Do you know how to work your electrical box?
how to turn off the breakers and reset the fuses? yes.

63. What temperature in your home is most comfortable to you?
around 18°C.

what use is a black light, i ask you? :)

Making those ancient day-glo concert posters luminesce, of course!

see, if i were really anal, i'd now go into a small dissertation on how a "black" light isn't really black, and...

if i were really anal, that is. *drags self away from the computer*.

snippy and velochicdunord must have some lovely day-glo posters!

if i were totally enormously anal, i'd point out that the awareness of which was why i included a smiley in my original post. *wink*.

anality also makes me construct tortured sentence such as that; it did not consent to being thusly abused.

Yep. Black lights are genius things for finding that pee stain that you can smell but just can't see. I keep mine on the fridge with "animal mess" cleaning kit.

that is really cool -- i never knew that. thanks!

i find cat pee mostly by knowing which things bacchus likes to pee on, and then using my nose.

now i must get one of those lights.

Have you been in my house?!?

Well, I'm not keen on wood panelling, which tends to make me feel moldy and depressed, and I try not to live within it, unless it's really beautiful or completely rustic, but aside from that.

Also: median-income student housing.

this wood panelling is deeply ugly. except at least it's real wood, albeit with these fake grooves and the dark stain. if this were my house, or if i had anticipated living here this long, if, if, if...

but i like it dark in my room, and dark it is.

Whoa, soc.singles. I used to read that group back in college when I was getting into Usenet. I didn't "get" it -- they didn't seem to be talking about what I wanted to discuss, not very much -- but now looking back on it I see what it was aiming for instead, and why that was worthwhile. I hadn't realized you wrote there.

oh yeah, soc.singles first and later soc.singles.moderated were my home on usenet for years. i wrote thousands of posts. some day i want to extract them all from google and read back over them; be an interesting series of snapshots of stuff that never made it into my private journal.

the groups were always misnamed which caused no end of strife with newcomers who joined because they thought it was for singles discussion (and possibly meeting) -- and who can really blame them. but there was no way to have the group most people wanted within the strict topical hierarchy of usenet.

soc.singles.moderated was pushed through the group creation process (which was quite draconian at the time) with the tag line of "conversations among people who are or were single". *heh*. i still can't believe that passed without notice. i was inordinately proud of us for doing that.

it worked quite well for a while after being created (while soc.singles devolved into a cesspool). but judging from what people say who left it later than i did, it didn't continue to work well. i haven't been back in some years now, and i don't think i can go back. but i miss what it once was, just like i miss PLATO, and i ponder creating a new place like that. heck, my friends list here is full of people from various online hangouts who all seem to feel similarly; they miss something they once had in an online community, and LJ isn't really filling that need.

i am wondering whether y'all would like each other. :) i might try to find out.

Aha! You must have been the piranha who never started threads. I have to admit that at the time I was more interested in stuff like what David Barber wrote, grossly reductionist though it was; I always admired the wit and cameraderie of the s.s. regulars who made it a community. It's just that I finally realized I didn't want an "online community," nor did I have the energy to sustain participation in one. I wanted to be part of a community which was connected online, like the many U of I college student social groups that interacted in PLATO notesfiles. It's less work. I'm impressed you have the time and mental energy to track all those conversations.

ha! yeah, that was me. :) how funny that you were there. i vaguely remember the name "david barber", but he's apparently left no lasting impression on me.

online-only (or mostly, since social newsgroups participants always seem to end up organizing occasional get-togethers) community is much easier for me because it requires neither my physical presence nor my immediate attention. i've always been so introverted that spending time with other people has sucked up a lot of energy, so much so that at times i had none left for myself. this is much worse now (fucking depression). last year i spent a long weekend at a small con in montreal; it took me more than two months to recover. and it's not that i had a bad time; i mostly had a good time, and i actively enjoyed the time i spent tangential to the con with individual people, that was very very nice. i had fun travelling too (i took greyhound, which was a bit of an ordeal, but also cool and mildly adventurous). and yet, i was totally exhausted (and much more from spending time with people than on the bus).

online community affects me much less, and i can also control it better; i can just walk away when things get heated, or when somebody irritates me. and i can get back to a conversation 4 hours later, after having had some sleep. or the next day, or even 2-3 days later. aside from the emotional factors, in serious discussions i have time to think first, and research issues, so i don't end up yaddaing off the top of my head, spouting vaguely recollected drek a la watercooler. i prefer email for difficult discussions between two people as well, it allows me time to reflect, and rewrite things that might be taken the wrong way otherwise.

the time is easily found -- i don't watch tv, i hardly socialize in meatspace anymore, 15 min here and there can be spent writing a post, and fits in between whatever chores i am doing, and my hobbies, while sucking up vast quantities of time, also allow for easy interspersion. i no longer do theatre or take classes, or do anything else that requires hours each week firmly scheduled.

12. How many plants are in your home?

Three. You forgot about the bindweed which has crept into my bedroom under the wall, and the grape vine which is pushing itself in through the front door.

17. Theme in your living room?
theme? *heh*.

Apocolypse Library?

22. What kinds of things are in your junk drawer?
junk. be serious! i don't actually have a junk drawer. every drawer is a bit junky to make up for that.

We have junk floors, junk rooms, junk counter-tops, junk desks, junk shelves, junk every-conceivable-flat-surface. But no, no junk drawers.

32. What color is your toothbrush?
white with teal bits.

And orange cat hair. Bacchus was having so much fun with it, I didn't have the heart to stop him.

38. What retro items are in your home?

Do full manual sets for Maya 3.0 count?

43. Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home?
yes.

Now you tell me!

47. Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home?

Six cats with twenty claws each.

52. What color is your favorite bible?
my favourite what? *laugh*.

Is "transparent" a colour?

57. Do you have a housekeeper?
hahahahahahahahahahhahhahahaa!

I thought I did...

59. Do you like solid colors in furniture or prints?
solid colour with texture that gives it shades.

Is it still considered a solid colour after the cats have ripped the bejeezes out of it?

funny thing is i actually own a bible, though you might have never seen it. it's in some box with a concordance. i think it's dark brown (and the concordance is a bright green). i also own a book of mormon and a qur'an.

or maybe all of those got lost in my move from WA to ON? i don't remember seeing them in a long time.

I have a depressing number of bibles, but at this point they all either have some significance or are just funky so I haven't gotten rid of any of them. Although I think The Word, as weirdly funky as it is, is going into the bag on the next trip to the used bookstore.

I actually do have a favorite Bible: I have one that rearranges everything to be in chronological order. Which is fascinating, particularly in seeing where all the Old Testament stuff that's usually read entirely out of context, like the minor prophets, fits into the chronology.
