ripening on the vine ripening on the vine

so to speak...

we'll see whether this has any useful results.

First reaction: "Whoa, a bananamato vine!"

Second reaction: If you hang the 'mato vine somewhere cool and dark, or else wrap the individual fruits in newspaper and lay them in a box, they'll ripen over a few weeks. I've had tomatoes at Christmas by doing that.

Third reaction: Damn me for letting my tomato plants die during the hot spell in July!

this is cool and dark. the lights are just for taking pictures. :)

yeah, i know about the wrapping -- this is a new experiment. and am not gonna wrap cherry and grape tomatoes. :)

next year: planting earlier, planting in a better location.

Next year (for me): Remembering to water, even if I'm in the middle of rehearsing a damned play.

Tomatoes ripened on the vine are supposed to taste better than those ripened in a bag or box. I'd read somewhere that hanging the leafless stalk like this in a dark place gave results somewhere between the two. So we're trying this with one of the plants to see how it turns out.

Intriguing photo. If results weren't useful, at least the pre-result was aesthetically pleasing.

you know, you're right. it has that "modern art show" installation look. *heh*.

I've heard an apple works better than a banana, but I don't usually bother ripening my green tomatoes, so feel quite free to haughtily ignore me. I have a friend who makes stupendous fried green tomatoes, so I take her mine. How are your peppers doing? Most peppers seem to kick it into high gear in the fall. I'm at my "ohmygawdwhatwasIthinking" stage of pepper harvest.

My tomatoes are making their fall come back (it's too hot in August for tomatoes to set), and I've picked a couple of ripe tomatoes this past week. Most of them won't make it to ripe, though. There are lots of falls around here when first frost isn't until Thanksgiving (end of November) but the decreasing hours of sunlight makes ripening slow.

ohmygawdwhatwasithinking is correct for my peppers too -- except in the other direction. i simply have no good place for them, and will just have to give up. yeah, we got a few banana peppers, and there are even 3 reds out there, but eh. next year, sugar snap peas again, they like that area better.

yeah, apples are much better than bananas, but i wanted to eat bananas. :) but i'll probably get some apples when i bring the cherry tomatoes inside. or maybe some avocados, which are also excellent ethylene producers.
