no wonder LJ has such a lousy reputation outside of its own little sphere. i had never quite realized why that is, being as my circle of actual friends stems from other places, and is not infested with the sort of major drama that seems common around here.

i don't mind doing abuse work at all; i am good at it and i neither look down on the users or feel i need to protect them and help them harbour illusions about what keeping a public journal means. but when the owner behaves as unprofessional as this one has since i've been paying attention, and when one of his employees thinks that's all just dandy, then i begin to see why this place is shunned by some whose opinion i value.

*retch*. it'll be somewhat less fun to do abuse from now on. and i am no longer sure i can last long in that endeavour. in fact i am thinking of quitting right now. funny, eh? i was sure the users couldn't get to me, and they haven't. it didn't even occur to me that the real crap would come from a completely different side.

I thought about saying, in that thread, that I trust the Abuse team because I know a few of them. Not sure if that would help or hurt, there: but yes, I trust you and Gwyneth and Jay and Rahaeli, and by extension Abuse as a group.

thank you. that matters. i think the team bends over backwards to do the right thing, if we can figure it out. which isn't always easy, and yes, mistakes are made, and we could probably institute procedures to avoid more of them, or catch more of them sooner.

of course most users don't realize that our primary task is to keep LJ out of legal trouble. i wonder what there he doesn't trust. as far as i know, he hasn't been sued lately, so we must be doing something right. but maybe he is confused, since he doesn't seem to read his own policies. if instead he wanted us to make most people's LJ experience a better one, he'd junk his "free speech ueber alles" ideas and crack down on the very abusers who whine to him about how power-hungry the abuse team is. it's a tiny percentage of people who louse it up for a great number of others.

this is such a joke, really.

I know nothing about the details of this, but when it becomes not-fun, I think that's a really okay time to take a break, for a while or forever.

well, i just came back from my vacation. :) and i don't want to leave the team in a lurch, with people resigning, rahaeli being sick, and all that. but yeah. i am definitely considering it.

I agree. I'm frustrated by the way that a lack of competence in the sociopolitical/management arena keeps shooting holes in the hull. :p It's like all sails up, all hands on deck, and then someone fires a canon into the hold and the water comes in.

New LJ motto: Don't let the captain near the canon!

If he doesn't trust his abuse team, why the fuck should they work for him for free?

it's not even about me

the thing that galls me the most (since i basically don't care what somebody who doesn't even know my name thinks of me) is that the team manager ROCKS. and she doesn't just rock for somebody who works for LJ for too little money and handles "only" a volunteer team; she really, honestly, rocks as a manager. her integrity and skills are lightyears beyond what the majority of managers with whom i've dealt over the years have had to offer. i would hire her instantly if i had a job for her; i would unreservedly recommend her to to anyone who'd ask me.

so here he has the best manager his money could possibly buy even if he paid her triple, and he is an ignorant lout, doesn't listen to her, and now insults her in public. and you know what? i don't buy the excuse that he's a geek and socially inept. i am a geek. my partners are geeks, many of my friends are geeks. none of us are "inept" in this way. none of us ever were inept this way either. and all of us know how to apologize when we fuck up.

i should stop talking about this for now. i am just spitting fire by this time. the team is losing a bunch of good people, and the work will be harder due to his thoughtless posts, and i am furiously angry that good people who have done nothing but work their asses off in a fairly thankless job get treated this way.

Because we're not doing it for him. Plain and simple.

Indeed - if that's the perception, let that myth be dispelled right now!

Believe me, a bunch of the team asked themselves that.

okay, i have no idea what this is about, either (although i can infer a great deal from the discussion) but it sounds like it sucks, so i'm sorry to hear that it is occurring. and that someone wakes up with a clue, soon.
