over the antics in parliament.

if the tories weren't such hypocrites whose only goal appears to be to bring down the government, i'd consider this definitely conniving. as it stands, maybe that's the only way one can deal with them. and i can't help but feel a bit of schadenfreude that after all the blustering they did the tories were completely outperformed. there is a certain elegance to the manoever, and they come across as woefully unprepared after claiming the liberals can't be trusted. right. so, if they can't be trusted, how come you weren't watching more carefully? and please -- we can all do without stephen harper comparing the liberals to satan and hannibal lecter (!).

but really -- *bleagh*.

so, now canada has an NDP budget! that'll be interesting to watch.

Seems to be working pretty well, all in all.

Making threats to bring down the government and getting pantsed is more a consequence of not understanding how parliamentary democracy has historically worked -- strong majorities were *rare*, and this sort of horse-trading was the norm. The 'give us all the marbles, us!' from the Tories would tend to indicate that they don't get it.

And there is a bright spot -- the Bloc, who are the closest thing Canada has to a fascist party, are enough pro-gay marriage to do this, at some considerable political cost to their ability to work with the Tories.

If the election is far enough in the future that the focus-on-cities has had a chance to deliver actual cash, the Liberals will have to run on that; that produces a chance to shift the political landscape away from some of the rural bias and the constrains of eighteenth century communications technology, which is all to the good.
