Just thought I'd mention that the date on jodawi's comment comes out in dark brown text on a dark blue background and is very hard to read.

I'll let piranha explain about later comma much. You wanted me to? That's just a bumnost.

it's a PLATOism. i don't actually know how it got started, or who started it. it derived from "later!", as an emphatic increase: later -> later, much -> later comma much.

since i've lately found a whole bunch of old PLATO pals on LJ, i've been dusting off the PLATOisms. :) just watch for the "i'm so sure" game that polyfrog just started below. i don't think any of these are remotely funny to people who were not there, *snicker*.

ooooohhhhh. i didn't even say it to myself as "later, much", but instead tried to decipher a code.

of course, my next comment is:

PLATO?

but i bet google would be more help for that than it was for comma

PLATO was an important early multi-user computer system, intended for educational uses. Some innovations of the PLATO system include early implementations of message boards, multi-user chat, and online gaming. Wikipedia () and Everything2 (http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=820872) both have some information on PLATO; I'm pretty sure that Ted Nelson's book (books?) Computer Lib/Dream Machines also included a detailed description of the PLATO system.

googling for PLATO probably brings up lots of greek philosopher stuff. :) bpt hit on some main points -- other ones are that PLATO was a timesharing system, that it was created for the distribution of educational software, and that it had lots of tools to faciliate communication between users. all of that provided fertile soil for the development of online community.

it was my first exposure to it, and it's still coloured in a lovely rose compared to my subsequent forays. :) i wouldn't be where i am today without PLATO, emotionally -- it helped cure my pathological shyness. and i started travelling widely because of PLATO. it was my first working experience highlighting how great telecommunicating could be. PLATO really was marvelous, and i'll never forget it.

if you want to learn more, there's this article by david woolley which talks in more detail about some communication features.

PLATO was the University of Illinois' chief contribution to massive multiuser role playing technology, where "massive" at the time meant 48.

It did some other stuff too, but ... who cares?

And is it true, pleonastic, that there is no ROCK on 14?

I love the PLATOisms. Sometimes I feel like the speaker of a dead language -- I spent years in college learning to sling the slang around, and now nobody recognizes it. At least I had some success importing bumnost into the Welsh language, though: Dyna fymnost my friends and I would say.

me too. well, mostly i love the stories behind them (like "derf"), and i love the memories they bring up. i don't know that i still carry any of the slang into the greater world -- interestingly enough, i also used "bumnost" for quite a while, but then stopped gradually. maybe i should pick it up again. :) but i've retained the lower case (though of course no longer for the same reasons), and i still enclose my emotive expressions in asterisks.
