today was jim's memorial. i wasn't there -- for a short while i contemplated flying east, but... oh, i dunno. somebody has to take care of the cats.
so i spent some time in contemplation. yesterday i made a small hill under the fallen apple tree, and today i planted a whole bunch of interesting plants there, and thought about jim while doing it. i didn't meet him until late in his life; i never knew him when he was struggling with his problems -- what i saw was a man who had genuinely worked hard to overcome them, and who was doing his best to live a good life, providing for his family, taking good care of his wife when she went through her hip operations. we weren't close, but i liked him. i regret we didn't ever build anything together; that would have been fun. but i provided him withcrack dick francis novels, and he really loved those. i'll probably always be thinking of him when i see one of those.
he wasn't into gardening, and he wasn't a buddhist, and it's not really a memorial garden, but it's pretty, and it has all sorts of nifty plants in it, in beautiful bronze and reds and dusky silver greens, and there's a small buddha statue on a laurel stone, enjoying it, *little smile*.
