Be careful what you wish for. I'll be pleased if he surprises us in a good way, but I'm aware that he could surprise us in a bad way too. There are a lot of practices that the Vatican has gotten away from since the last Pope Benedict. I'd be very disappointed to see things like Papal Concordia (agreements with specific governments to back them) reinstated.

Many years ago, a much younger Father Ratzinger was an enthusiastic supporter of the reforms of Vatican II. Somewhere along the way things changed too quickly for him, and he became the hardliner we know him as now. It is my sincere hope that as Pope he will find again the enthusiasm and trust in his fellow Catholics that he exhibited in the 60's.

sadly, he'd be hard pressed to surprise me negatively, really. i don't really see him as a person to reinstate some of the really horrible practices of the past.

on the other hand, yeah, he once was a liberal. i can always hope. :)

it's got to be an amazing feeling to become pope. who knows what it does to one's relationship with one's god; one might well be moved to very different things from one's normal MO.
