suck on this, google+
Sep. 1st, 2011 08:17i just wrangled an invite to diaspora -- anyone else here on it yet? they're still in alpha; when they go into beta there will be lots of invites as i understand it.
just in comparison with facebook and google+, i liked it as soon as i signed up: no gender boxes to tick that give you 2 or at most 3 options! you get an input field and can write what you want for your gender. and you can pick as your identity whatever the hell you please; two things that make me very, very happy. it has "aspects" instead of circles; they seem to work the same way. you can connect to twitter, tumblr, and facebook as of now.
furthermore, i can export my contributions in xml. there's a photo service app, cubbi.es, attached that i haven't tried yet, and i can also download all my photos -- thanks for making it easy to go cross-platform with my stuff.
in the long run what i really want is one place where i can connect all those services. i am disinclined to check N social networks every day, and some i don't want to check at all (facebook, and now google+), but i want to maintain a presence there so i can connect with the people who primarily use other sites. ideally this would be dreamwidth because i know the peeps who run it, like them, and want to support them. but i am not sure how that fits with the plans here; i'm out of the loop and need to try catching up.

on 2011-09-02 07:58 (UTC)nobody i know in meatspace is on facebook (one of my partners is, but only pro-forma), so it's easy for me to ignore it. but yeah, if everyone you know is there, that becomes very hard. which is why i am so ticked off at google+.
well, whenever you decide you want to check out diaspora again, just let me know. their twitter gateway (one way right now) works great, and i assume the facebook one does as well since i've not seen anyone complain about it.

on 2011-09-01 16:53 (UTC)I mean, I might've misunderstood or gotten the wrong impression, but that's what I'd thought the plan was. It could also be wishful thinking: I find DW's underlying architecture familiar and comfortable after a decade of using it, and especially nice to use with all the usability work on fixing the broken places. And while I've gotten used to dealing with multiple social networks, it's not my ideal! *g*

on 2011-09-02 07:15 (UTC)diaspora seems to be designed so other people can run the software on their own servers and form their own "pods" that can connect to others, but i haven't checked out whether i got that right, and how it's implemented. that might take care of the decentralisation.
(ok to unscreen your comment?)

on 2011-09-02 10:36 (UTC)I am curious about diaspora, but I'm not sure I can handle digging into another social network at the moment -- Tumblr and Twitter have eaten up pretty much everything I have left for brain cycles.
