so i've been reading the "no child left behind" act, spurred on by [livejournal.com profile] antiwarblog. there are a few interesting sections, such as the one protecting prayer in public schools, and enforced access for the boy scouts to school facilities, nevermind their discriminatory membership regulations.

but this is the crème de la crème: section 9528 requires schools to provide military recruiters access to the names, addresses, and telephone listings for secondary students. isn't that special.

parents can opt out, but i wonder how many parents even know about this. did anyone notify them?

That sounds very familiar... I think a big stink was made about this a while back, possibly when the law was passed. I seem to remember that going around some circles I read.

As I recall, no, parents were not notified. By secondary students, do you mean junior high or high school students? I never know what that term means.

I know that the military also watches SAT and ACT results (which are shared with various educational institutions); I remember getting paper mail spam from West Point, etc. after taking my pre-college tests.

I got a call from a Marines recruiter when I was 13 or so, since I'd taken the SAT for CTY. He was a persistent chap.
