i decided being involved with a mobster, while appealing to my dark side, did not appeal to my sensible side. shortly thereafter i met the paramour. my sensible side is very smart.
2. When was the last time you shaved?
yesterday. blessedly hair-free chin for a day!
3. What were you doing this morning at 8 AM?
reading about explosive duck sex.

posting about explosive duck sex.
5. Some things you are excited about?
spring! spring! spring! the boat is coming along very well. also, there are so damn many interesting people on DW.
6. What is your favorite flavor of JELL-O?
raspberry. i make it with sour cream.
7. Your prom night, what do you remember about it?
my what? oh, you US-centric memester, you.
8. Do you have any famous ancestors?
i have no idea. i also don't care. the less said about my birth family, the better.

just lemon/lime mineral water.

if i have to, sure. but mostly i avoid calling anyone on the phone.

never. i undertake civil engineering projects instead.
13. Any plans for Friday night?
i don't make long-term plans. wait, that is today. yeah, still no plans.
14. Do you like what the ocean does to your hair?
while i am swimming, oh yes. its my main reason for growing it longer in the summer. after it dries, not so much. saltwater is totally itchy on one's scalp.
15. Have you ever received one of those big tins of 3 different popcorns?
no. do feel free. :)
16. Do you re-use towels after you shower?
yes. i'm not a particularly hygiene-freaky person (and that's an understatement).
17. Describe your keychain(s)?
a large, electric blue carabiner. it holds keys for the shack, the shop, the truck, the post box, a flashlight, a tape measure, a screwdriver, and a petsmart courtesy mini-card (that needs to come off; it bugs me).
18. Where do you keep your change?
some in the change pocket of my wallet, twoonies in a ceramic cow on the window sill, loonies in the ashtray in the truck, quarters in a clam shell, the rest in a margarine container waiting to be rolled. it's been waiting for a while now; the container is near-full.
19. When was the last time you spoke in front of a large group of people?
umm. that would have been at some conference more than 15 years ago; i don't even remember, though i am sure i was petrified. hate public speaking.
20. What kind of winter coat do you own?
got no winter coat. we don't get sufficiently cold winters to be worth it; i just layer. my main coat is a grey wool/hemp jacket. i've also got a bright yellow rain jacket with a large hood.

on 2010-03-20 03:21 (UTC)now you have me thinking back to high school. hm. i generally didn't mind speaking in front of my class. i went to a very good high school, in an accelerated track, and everybody was there to learn (we were very, very serious, *grin*; it's amusing in retrospect). for the most part we knew what each other knew, and presentations were interesting. i don't recall everyone having to recite the same poem -- but i didn't grok poetry, so any reciting i had to do, i didn't like anyway.
university was much harder, and the classes were large, and my dislike and fear of public speaking started then -- it has a lot to do with strangers, and not knowing what they already know, and fear of imposition. i was so bored sometimes when listening to others. but at least there was no more poetry.
i took acting classes to help make myself self shy, but for the most part that was a resounding failure. i couldn't even get myself to do some of the assignments that had to do with approaching strangers in public.
online the whole imposition fear mostly disappears because hey, people can scroll past my verbosity or click away.

on 2010-03-20 06:45 (UTC)And yes, I do often write more than is my fair share because people could scroll past if they're tired of seeing it. You can usually tell if I'm feeling self-conscious because I use a lot more cut tags.
It's hard to tell when you have something to say. And so many people who get up to talk don't. Most presentations I see now are "Let me read you my powerpoint slides that you could have skimmed in 38 seconds if I just left you alone with a printout of the text."
Everyone says acting classes... but nothing is going to help if you don't want the problem fixed. I keep thinking I'm not broken, the rest of the world is screwed up. Sometimes the majority is wrong.

on 2010-03-20 07:26 (UTC)this is really it for me. i didn't want it badly enough, and i didn't push through the fears to learn more about it. i know i can do that if i really care, but in this case i went at it half-assed. i would have liked to be less shy, but i didn't put in the work.
i really appreciate it if somebody can make an interesting presentation and convey something to me that i can take home and ponder. somebody who is enthusiastic about their work can inspire me. but for the most part i don't learn well from audio input, and am better off if there's good reading material.
i don't think anymore that i am broken about this, or the rest of the world is screwed up -- i look at it more as a battle i chose finally not to fight. some people do learn well from listening to others speak, and so it's good that there are speakers who can present material that way. but i don't have to be one of them; i can share what i know in other ways. online communities have been great for me; they managed what acting never did -- take the really dysfunctional part of the shyness away.
