There comes a time in every science writer’s career when one must write about glass duck vaginas and explosive duck penises.

ooooo-kay. i knew that drakes (male ducks) are not gentle lovers, but that instead they generally rape their sex partners, which don't necessarily have to be female, ducks, or heck, even alive. what i didn't know is that apparently evolution has served female ducks with the ability to sidetrack the drake's ejaculation into a blind alley of the duck cloaca if she doesn't like him. and in turn drakes have developed explosive corkscrew penises.

I always kind of marvel at how many baby ducks actually get produced every year, in light of this.

Despite their rapey-mc-rapist general inappropriate behavior (our bantam drake pursued a round brown bantam hen with intent to rape, attempted to rape his daughters, assaulted his sons, and delighted in flying after the much larger goose to terrify her), some ducks actually like their drakes. Amazingly.

(The flying-after-the-goose-to-terrify-her only worked until the goose couple adopted the duck couple's ducklings, at which point the goose grew a spine and began thrashing the drake when he offered to behave inappropriately towards any of his children.)
