How do you find time to read all these books?!

a) m/m genre fiction isn't particularly long, on average. anything can call itself an "e-book", starting with stories of just a few thousand words. even most of the novels come in at only around 50,000 words -- i read that easily before going to sleep.

b) it's also not demanding reading; i kinda scarf them down. much of it has the consistency of fluff.

c) i like to keep a nice, long reservoir of books i've not yet read.

c) i read very fast.

Ah, e-books are shorter.

That does sound marginally less frustrating than my habit of reading extremely trashy romance novels, of which I suppose I read a terrifying amount. Perhaps I should switch.

i didn't start reading a lot of e-books until a couple of years ago, because my pleasure reading happens mostly in bed, and i didn't have a computer that was small/light enough to take to bed. then the *poing* gifted me with an OLPC XO, and that changed my reading habits very quickly. it's not actually light enough to hold in my hand, but i can fold it in various ways and usually find a comfortable position in which to read. still, i am about ready to buy a dedicated e-book reader.

add to it that in genre m/m i can almost always get what i want in electronic format (very little is published only in print), and it is generally cheaper than buying paperbacks, and i buy much more m/m now than any other genre. trashy romances in general seem to do extraordinarily well as e-books.

the main reason i am posting my hauls is that a lot of m/m authors are upset about piracy, and i want to show that we actually BUY, and do in fact buy more after being exposed to the genre via filesharing.

by now i am totally sold on ebooks. i convert everything i buy into an open format, so that technology changes won't leave me with DRMed crap that can't be read by anything anymore. thousands of books fit on a tiny SD card or USB flash drive; easy to back up. and i can search them. i want my entire library in electronic format now.

I'm not sold on ebooks for me personally--reading on a screen tires me out for anything novella-length or longer, plus I do a lot of my trashy mindless reading in the bath. But I mostly check stuff out of the library, which is full of trashy and often infuriating m/f romance, but not so much other kinds.

Well, things will change eventually. Someday there will be a totally waterproof e-reader that perfectly mimics the reading qualities of print, I hope!
