state supreme court justice ling-cohan decided in favor of five gay couples who had been denied marriage licenses by NYC. "Under both the federal and New York State constitutions, it is beyond question that the right to liberty extends to protect marriage" wrote the justice.

Go us! We're more progressive than over one-third of Canadian provinces! "...[T]he fundimental right to marry the person of one's choice may not be denied based on longstanding and deeply held traditional beliefs about appropriate marital partners." Sweet.

Just so you know, especially since it isn't intuitive, the Supreme Court is not the highest court in the state. Presumably the ruling has to clear the Court of Appeals. I don't have any reason to believe that it will be reversed, though.

yeah, i know in NY the supreme court is at the level of a trial court. weird. :)

good to hear that you don't expect a reversal; i don't have a good feel for that.
