Stanford photo scientists are out to reinvent digital photography with the introduction of an open-source digital camera, which will give programmers around the world the chance to create software that will teach cameras new tricks.

If they wanted to have a more visible impact, one would think they would collaborate with the people who are building firmware revs for existing cameras. Maybe they intend to at some point.

Or maybe all lenses are such crap these days that having top-end hardware doesn't count. (I was actually thinking about that the other day -- a modern camera factory could have the last thing on the line be a series of pictures of a uniformly-illuminated dot grid at different zooms and f-stops , and then burn into memory the transforms necessary to make the camera linear. If they have enough processing power to follow faces in realtime...
