sickly-ish
Dec. 29th, 2004 18:19not really sick, but second day of feeling nauseated, not quite to the point where it feels like i might have to run for the bucket, but hovering just before that. and cold. *brrr*.
ergo, bed. warmer there. making up simple crochet pattern that'll work for anything, from skinny scarf to stole.

on 2004-12-30 08:04 (UTC)here's the basic recipe, which sounds more complicated than it is; if you can make basic crochet stitches you'll be golden, and the counting isn't complicated either:
add up the pattern stitches. since you want to end in a solid block, if you use my numbers, that's 12+6+12=30. you can of course use any numbers that look good to you.
make a gauge patch with your yarn to see how much real estate you cover, so you can calculate how many stitches to chain. or be lazy like i am when i make scarves, and just chain away, counting, and measure on yourself whether it's sort of long enough yet for the look you want. if you are lazy, you should have a good idea of your gauge so you don't end up short. make the number divisible by the pattern stitches (eg, 30 here). i did 210 with this yarn and hook. if you want fringe, figure out how much, and quadruple that (20x4=80). add those together (290). chain chain chain. to make life easier on yourself if you use a fuzzy yarn like this, put a stitch marker in after the first double fringe count (40), and again when your chain hits the end double fringe count (250).
turn. skip double your fringe (40) -- if you used a stitch marker, you don't need to count this again, *grin*. start your pattern -- 12 double crochet into 12 chain, 6 chain skipping over 6 chain, 12 double crochet... until you get to the other stitch marker. with the 12th double crochet, pick up the very first chain stitch and go into it and the 40th stitch at the same time, to get that double fringe bit like at the other end. then chain double your fringe count (40), turn, skip over it all, and start your pattern with 12 double crochet into the previous 12, 6 chain...
it's extremely simple once you get going. and it drapes very nicely because it has so much air in it. :) you can make it as wide as you want -- that skinny scarf up there is 4 rounds wide, 6.5 cm in my yarn, which uses up about one skein at 105m. i am gonna make a much wider stole out of it cause i want something semi-warm but not heavy for inside. depending on how it drapes, i might add beads to the fringe afterwards, or maybe crochet with a contrasting eyelash yarn around it to give a little weight -- new age is an extremely light microfibre yarn.
if you don't like the double fringe (i am not so sure about it myself), just make it without, and add your own loose yarn fringe later, or don't, as you please.
i think this would look good in a yarn that gives a much more defined stitch.
