piranhato all who acknowledge them, and merry christmas to those who actually celebrate the birth of jesus on this occasion.
i actually think celebrating jesus' birthday is a fine thing. i like jesus. i don't buy the whole son-of-god idea (since i don't buy the god idea itself, that sort of follows), but what i know of jesus, i like. and it makes perfect sense to me that those who believe in his godhood would see his birthday as a very special day indeed. i don't begrudge them that at all. i wish them an outstanding spiritual time.
there seems to be an uproar about us heathens taking the christ out of christmas. i'd like to register a mild complaint about that. firstly, i think you should look to the almighty dollar, the god of the capitalist religion, for abusing christ to the point where the holy days are no longer about spirituality for many believers either. and then you should recognize and acknowledge that other people do not believe as you do, and however much your religion encourages proselytizing, you better believe that it's very annoying to have it pushed into our faces all the time. i'd wager a bet you'd feel so too if you lived in a country where the majority of people believes in a different god, or a different word from god than you do.
us heathens aren't taking the christ out of christmas. we're merely carving out our own space around us again where you had previously intruded from the privilege of being the majority. i know you think america is a melting pot, but a lot of people don't want to see their own beliefs covered with the melted chocolate of the majority religion.
i think you'll find that as soon as you, the majority, wish muslims an "eid mubarak" and jews a "chag sameach", for example, there will be a lot more freely accepted and given "merry christmas". it's a respect thing, you know?
