8-30 long mailbox plus, 2.5 km. timid came galloping across the (dog-owning) neighbour's yard and jumped his chainlink fence to mreep at us loudly and repeatedly, and started coming along. since we don't like the cats to come along in that direction because of traffic, we turned around and shook her off. i have no idea why she was so vocal. she wouldn't come close either. on the way back we walked along that stretch of road, and she was waiting and came back home with us.

When my dad was in HS, he had a cat which would follow him around in that manner, but I don't recall him saying anything about being timid. It strikes me that the cat in question has some mixed messages for you.
The Squeaker used to follow Mack and Sasha up the hill sometimes, when she was younger. That ended about the time we got Booboo in to the mix, but when she lived with Mack and I in Ellensburg she would often go out with him to "play jungle" in the back yard. I miss having a cat, and so does Mack, but Booboo is such a little shit with cats that I hesitate to try again.

all our cats walk with us (which looks extremely funny when they all decide to come along; usually it's just a subset). the weird thing was that timid was so vocal but didn't come close -- usually when she's talkative she wants food (the bowls were full) or attention, and comes close for petting. but she stayed just out of reach and mreeped and mreeped and mreeped.

maybe a feisty kitten with booboo? it'd probably take a lot of effort and watching booboo like a hawk though.

Booboo is our smallest dog, at 75 pounds, but we had a hard lesson when he got a case of the nasties with the Squeak. It is not a fair fight by a long shot.
