walklog:
8-09 extension ridge (abyss) trail, returning via logging roads to nanaimo lakes road, 8.53 km, 3:59, elevation gain 1085m. it was cooler today, and quite breezy -- lovely hike, even when we got rained on for a while after coming out of the trees (naturally). arbutus are in their "shedding" period, where the outer two layers of bark fall off and expose the new, pistachio-green inner layer. and extension ridge is full of arbutus (and manzanita, which is a close relative, also sheds, but doesn't have the new bright green bark, but is wonderfully twisted). this is the first time we've made this loop, and we weren't entirely sure whether we were on the right track (since i had conveniently forgotten the map at home), but it felt mostly right, and turned out pretty well thanks to much mountain biker activity carrying on with a trail after the logging road petered out. didn't meet a soul.
this is about the extent i can walk right now without my feet protesting.
afterwards we went eating at the "mayflower" restaurant on bruce, which was a chinese smorg with nothing to write home about.
