on 2008-08-08 16:19 (UTC)My basement cat is Maple, he is the color and markings of maple wood, so it isn't always about color. Plus we have a picture of him under a chair that Smir is on. So Smir is ceiling cat, despite being darker.

on 2008-08-08 17:09 (UTC)I suspect the answer has to do with cats being closer to the ground than us, taking advantage of cooler air there, and being able to stretch out on cool surfaces when the opportunity presents itself.
The basement cat has an additional advantage in that it's cool in most basements, even when it's as hot as hell upstairs.
Pity the poor ceiling cat.
