Cats normally have a higher body temperature than humans. I bet that helps.

What a fine black cat. Mine all seem to stretch long in the heat, though actually if any of them lie in the sun to do so they seem to be black ones.

OMG KITTY KITTY

That cat looks a lot like Max, our Black Prince, except Max is bigger (fat, really) and has yellow demonic eyes.

Even black cats have a better surface/volume ratio than humans of any fur color (at least humans old enough to comment intelligibly on the matter).

not just because black, but the eyes made me think mischief may be on the back burner.

My basement cat is Maple, he is the color and markings of maple wood, so it isn't always about color. Plus we have a picture of him under a chair that Smir is on. So Smir is ceiling cat, despite being darker.

Oooh, kitty cat!

I suspect the answer has to do with cats being closer to the ground than us, taking advantage of cooler air there, and being able to stretch out on cool surfaces when the opportunity presents itself.

The basement cat has an additional advantage in that it's cool in most basements, even when it's as hot as hell upstairs.

Pity the poor ceiling cat.
