Ok, I give up.

It's obvious that the wee tiny plant is growing through a former tree, or a former plank, or something wooden, but what something? I can't figure out how anything would rot like that if it's not end grain, and it's quarter sawn sort of face grain if I'm not totally deluded about what I'm looking at.

you know, i can't precisely remember. but since i called them "nurselings", and judging from the surrounding pictures i think it wasn't a plank, or anything sawn because i was in the woods at that point. it's likely the endgrain of a very large, old stump -- these were very, very small and i had to go very close, which probably explains why there's no ring structure showing. normally the old trunks are much higher up though, so i am not 100% -- but my mind's eye says "stump".

now i wonder whether i could find this again. i remember the rough whereabouts due to the surrounding pictures. oh hey, i could pinpoint it since my camera is time-synced with my GPS receiver, and i plotted the course. :)
