walklog:

05-12 walley creek 3.42km 1:41 252m. this is a wide, paved, multiuse trail for about 1 km, which is quite boring for the first section. but fortunately one can veer off into the bush now and then where it's more interesting. for the second part of the trail there's wetland to the right and left -- and while nanaimo's powers that be seem usually pretty adept about building good trails, this is not so good -- the trail is asphalt (which oozes crap into the water). and it bisects the wetland, with a high chainlink fence on one side -- which makes it hard for even waterfowl to cross, because the space on one side is quite narrow, and take-off isn't going to be easy. this design is asinine.

i walked back through the quiet neighbourhood: vista view (who named this?), williamson, fillinger, entwistle. saw 5 deer resting in an empty lot, one of whom partook of some fresh new tree leaves.

I think Vista View is just broken output from the Generic Suburb Name Generator that has given Brisbane: Riverview, Riverhills, Westlake, Forest Lake, Springfield, Springfield Lakes, Springwood, Brookwater, Brookfield, Edenbrooke, Meadowbrook.

I just know I'm going to get some of those mixed up at some point.

On the other hand, I am very fond of the names Ferny Grove, Fig Tree Pocket, and The Gap.

I am quite fond of the theory that suburbs are named after whatever they destroyed in order to build the suburb.

yeah, that's my theory for developments like "whispering pines" or "hidden valley". however, "vista view" does indeed still have a view. to both sides. hey, maybe that's why they chose this peculiar name.

alternatively: clueless about the meaning of semi-esoteric words.

or maybe they're microsoft fans.

gee, i wonder which one i am betting on.

If it were in California, I'd wonder if there were a vista view of Lago Lake along El Camino Street.

That deer obviously needs to finish shedding his winter coat. Rags and tatters! (I love the rags and tatters look of spring. *grin*)

It's a shame about that second half of the trail. Is that bit older or newer? Which way is the trend going?

Congrats on failing to look like a predator!

That's an extremely modest amount of dubiousness from that deer.

it was a bit more dubious when it first saw me. but these deer are very used to humans -- they're hanging out right smack in the middle of a subdivision, so it's less my doing as more their acclimatization. as long as one moves very slowly and stops when they look at you dubiusly, one can get fairly close.
