calypso bulbosa, one of our native orchids. fairy slippers are generally not common, but i saw at least 10 along this trip.

walklog:

04-24 nanaimo river upstream, from cedar bridge 1.97 km 2:20. quite a bit of bushwhacking, some very narrow trails along the steep shore (and a wee bit of trespass) right along the nanaimo river almost up to the cedar swimming hole -- which unfortunately one cannot actually get to that way, unless one swims there. the river seems quite deep enough for that here though, even in summer.

Oh, glorious. *envy envy envy* I've seen them just once, in northwestern Minnesota at Itasca State Park, on the edge of a very steep drop-off, facing away from the path. Raphael got some pictures, but I was worried I was about to lose a sweetie the whole time.
