yes, this is a fairly rare and sensitive ecosystem on the island, called "terrestrial herbaceous" -- the soil is very thin, and human impact isn't kind to it at all. just walking through it can dislodge many small plants that won't be able to re-establish themselves on the rocks. i stay on paths, and don't bushwhack in these areas.

we've got a lot of different ecosystems, from marine to alpine, all within a few hours of home. it's a really great place to live if one likes natural places.
