Nice colours indeed!
I find it weird how those shells/barnacles on the rock (or that starfish you had posted the other day) are purple...
I think it's my first time seeing them on those colours...it looks good on them. Image

Also you say it's underwater and I'm impressed because it looks like it's out of water, I mean there's no reflections or such things...

under normal coditions one can't really see how brilliant many colours are underwater, because of what water does to light (and also because there is usually some particulate in the water so it isn't really entirely clear. one can help the former a little with a polarizing lens (i don't use the one i have much because it fuzzes the corners of my images). but generally what's the best is if a) the water is very shallow and b) the light is exactly right so you don't get reflections.

this was taken in a very shallow tidal pool that i could access from all sides, and the light was perfect from one direction.

Heh, or the camera can take a dive in the water!
There was this once when some cousin wanted to photo the bottom of the sea so she used the glass of a diving mask...I can't remember how successful she was...

Seriously, pleo, you're very very good!

*heh*. yeah, i wish i had an underwater camera, or one of those special cases that convert your regular camera into one. i have an optically clear and watertight bag, but i've not been particularly successful with it; it's a pain to operate the camera controls through the plastic. there is _so much_ cool stuff underwater here.

Yeah, underwater is amazing...
I love wearing my mask and exploring underwater along the beaches...hehe, close to what you do on land!!!

*brings out calendar to calculate when it'll be first swim of the year...*
Some people go swimming the whole year, the sea temperature here doesn't get below 15°C so it's feasible, but I'm not that brave...I prefer to wait until it rises to a comfortable 24-25...which will take some time...*sigh*

You're talking about rivers, right?

a comfortable 24-25 -- ha ha, oh how i envy you. here the water is a chilly 8-12; if i want warmer temps i have to drive north to a beach that is very very shallow where it gets up to 21 in july and august. but that beach is no fun for snorkeling because it is so shallow. i go swimming locally, but *brrr*, it always takes some courage to get in. the river swimming hole near us gets a bit warmer in the summer months, but i prefer swimming in the ocean because there is so much more to see.

warmer temps would be nice, but actually the marine life is so plentiful here because the waters are in this temperature range year around.

some day i want to learn scuba diving.

So you were talking of sea after all!
*brrr*
I wouldn't go near Pacific ocean without an isothermal suit even in my wildest dreams...
Pleo, you've got really high resistance of cold!

Hehe, Mediterranean sea rulez regarding temperatures, the only disadvantage is that as it's mostly surrounded by land the renewal rate of the waters is low so it's sensitive to pollution.

Please, be careful of the sharks if you go scuba!

we don't have any aggressive and dangerous (to humans) sharks here -- we have one largeish shark (six-gill shark), but it is very shy and even people who try to see it are often frustrated. we have lots and lots of spiny dogfish, which are a small schooling shark. people dive and play with them -- http://www.elasmodiver.com/spiny_dogfish_at_quadra_island_s.htm

the waters are way too cold for sharks like a great white to like it here.

This is why my mind boggled at the "why not swim to Protection Island?" web page. What is it Neal Stephenson says? Something like "In the North Pacific, all a wetsuit does is keep your frigid corpse afloat."

The way the rock is cracked in parallel, like slices ... makes me think I really should get that loaf of bread eaten soon before it starts to sprout life. :-) Good photo.
