de mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est as a concept has always bugged me.

so since i am extra grumpy today, i'd like to declare "good riddance to bad rubbish" in memory of william f. buckley.

i hope to still be alive when the shrubwad dies, because I WILL DANCE.

I will say this in favor of him: he sure looked good in comparison to the current crop of Republicans. . .

Admittedly, I can think of no fainter praise in the history of humanity. . .

So, for that matter, does Barry Goldwater.

(I draw the line at revisionism re: Richard Nixon, who really was Evil Incarnate...)

Nah, they don't make Nixon look good, but Cheney in particular makes Nixon look smarter and more moderate by comparison. (The one thing Cheney seems to have learned from his years working for Nixon is not to hire anyone who might possibly be honest of have a conscience.)

If you don't like even the faint praise, just shudder to think that these losers were too crazy even for Buckley.

A textbook example of a great mind turned to questionable purposes for sure. I suppose better than the name calling which passes for most commentary today, but he always kinda reminded me of Goebbels actually.

To quote from his NY Times obit, "Less kind commentators preferred the adjective 'pleonastic'".
