Is that really a closeup of moss?

the green grassy-looking stuff is moss. the thing with the red head is a lichen, i believe (i know very little about moss and lichen). it is really tiny; here's a slighly blurred picture of the moss patch where i took this closeup; for size comparisons, the longish brown needles are about 3/4 inch long, as are the red-headed lichen sentinels.

I don't have words for how completely astounded I am by these photos. I mean, I've been enjoying the whole series, but this one just blows me away. I can't wait to show [livejournal.com profile] someotherguy when he gets home. (It's bachelor night tonight -- I'm up wayyyy too late, goofing off with my new softwares.)

(That is, my new purchased recipe software, and my new lessons in programming with PHP. Much NPE.)

mmh, new software!

i'm glad you're enjoying the photos. i love taking close-ups because i end up seeing so many more things in the pictures than i see when i look with the naked eye.

after googling just a little, maybe this is cladonia cristatella. seems a common name for it is "british soldier", *heh*. i wasn't that far off with the "sentinel" crack.

Looks like a Cladonia to me, though one myco class does not an expert make.
