not so creepy when seen with the naked eye; they're just a few mm high. no, definitely not a cactus, but i am not certain what they are -- the structure looks very much like cedar, so they might be very young seedlings, before the first branch appears. i have a seedling outside in a pot (i didn't plant it, it did its own thing), but i never saw it in the early stages.

i'll probably ask in the UBC plant forum whether anyone recognizes this.
