mural

yesterday between returning the holter monitor to the internist and seeing my GP for an update and new RX, i had some time to kill and wandered around a part of town i'd not seen before.

i like it when people beautify their completely prosaic business buildings in some ways. murals are fun.

Nanaimo on accident a couple years ago and found it to be a really
cool place. I would like to come out there again. Of course I got to do the
Dingy Dock run as well but didn't have enough time to visit that island/park
(i forgot the name)I want to go back again some time.

protection island. i wouldn't mind living there; it's a nice place. and so close to newcastle island (which is all park); at low tide one can wade across.

OK, I just looked it up, and that place is just awesome and studly.

I realize I have a completely irrational weakness for the idea of living on an island, probably unconnected with whether I'd actually be happy with the lifestyle.

This web page (http://www.nanaimoinformation.com/swimming-to-protection.php) was particularly amusing: "You can reach Protection Island by ferry or private boat, but why bother? It only takes about 40 minutes to swim to Protection from the Yacht Club."

*laugh*. swimming across nanaimo harbour is not my idea of a fun time; too damn much traffic! having a seaplane come down on one might up the excitement level just a wee bit too much as well.

i like living on islands, though vancouver island is a bit too large to get the right feel -- but as long as it doesn't have a bridge, it retains some of the island idea of living on a different time scale, slower, more deliberate, less harried. protection island seems cool to me, but where i really want to live is saltspring island -- that's large enough to have a thriving community many of whom actually work on the island as well (protection is a bit too small). and the community there is is artsy and generally interesting -- people who left the rat race, who're above-average environmentally conscious, and more likely to listen to a different drummer. it's that sort of thing that islands foster, i think.

Lovely photo! May I link to this post from [livejournal.com profile] ottarz_mob? That's a fairly small community.

sure you can -- anything public is ok to link; you don't need to ask.

Pleo it's snowing!!!

And it's funny...and white...and cold...and slippery...and how do you northerns manage in such (or most likely harsher) temperatures is out of my comprehension...

That was my road first thing in the morning:

*heh*! one of you looks delighted (you or your sister?)! :)

snow as a rarity is fun. for a while. i love the first snow of the season. but fortunately we don't get much here because, even though we're more northern than you, we're right on the coast and it doesn't generally produce the right conditions for snow. i should dig up my pictures from the last big snowfall; they're impressive -- but it didn't stay longer than a couple days.

up in the mountains it gets really serious -- enough to hold the winter olympics here (on the mainland, not right here on the island).

My sister is the crazy one in the foreground! Totally lost it huh? Image
I'm the baffled one behind, fooling on the cell with a friend about the snow...

Actually the exchange went like this:
10: Friend prints "Are you seeing what I'm seeing?"
20: Me prints "No way!"
30: Go to 10
40: End

Until the loop was broken by someone sneaking a handfull of snow down my neck! Brrrrr... I accepted the declaration of war, hanged up and went on mortal combat mode! Image Alas, the absence of gloves from my part was a serious drawback...BRRRRR...

Soon we returned inside because it was too cold...did some betting on how high the snow will reach...got a little drunk -someone said that he knew that recipe with rum, lemon and snow, most of us preffered rakomelo (raki with honey)...the snow went higher than our expectations...and now most of the company is sleeping here and I'm about ready to retire...sorry if I'm babbling, I'm a little drunk! Image

Hehe, it was a fun day and is still snowing, I'm looking out the window and everything is white! I'm not using my car tomorrow...I'll go with public transports just to be safe...
Here, in Athens, the snow is also a rarity and it doesn't last long, last time we got snowed in was on 2004. The forecast said that the weather will improve significantly from Tuesday...schools will remain closed until then...and people should be cautious of ice...

That's for now, until next update

many drunkenly giddy hugs
your friend
