fun time waster for people who like words. :) with the added bonus that our time wasting feeds hungry people. this is really the ultimate in first world privilege charity, ain't it.

i knew i wasn't gonna be able to stay away from the rice thing for any length of time when i first saw it, though i held out for several days. but today it's rainy, i am cold, and not in the mood for photoshop, or for organizing my smut, or, naturally, anything productive.

i'm hovering pretty much on 48, with a few forays all the way to 50, but i cannot stay on 49 reliably. i MUST NOT second-guess myself; if i have an immediate flash of recognition, even if i doubt it when looking at the choices, i should just trust it; i am much more often right than wrong.

And here I thought I was gonna go to bed early. I must have played a bit longer than you, because I'm sticking around 45

The rice grains are so addictive! And yeah, I get a pretty similar score to you, somewhere around 48 with occasional leaps to 49 or 50. I've found a fair number of biological technical terms in there, which do give me an unfair advantage.

unfair advantage?

that's interesting that you say it gives you an "unfair advantage". it's clearly an advantage (as is my long-term interest in bio and medicine -- which makes up for never taking latin in high school). but how is it unfair?

The way I'm thinking of it is a bit like this: if the examples are skewed towards biology, and I happen to be a biologist, than I am going to get a higher score than really represents my "vocabulary level". (If such a measurement exists, I suppose it would be how well I do compared to the total population on a completely unbiased vocabulary test.) But I'm not so convinced any more that the word list over-represents biology as much as I thought at first.

Actually I'm quite impressed with the breadth now I've played a few more times. Their "hard" words are not exclusively latinate, which can be a major flaw in a vocab exercise. They have foreign origin words (which is great for me when they happen to be Yiddish!) and old-fashioned words and technical terms from various domains. Not a bad mix overall.

My hover is on 45, with the occasional foray to 46. I'd also do a bit better if I didn't second guess myself.

Well that was Friday. I tried again today. Sticking mostly at 46 with a fair amount of success at 47, and a couple of brief blips up to 48 or 49. Haven't seen a 50 yet.

Like I need ANOTHER computer habit! *grin* Actually, it's quite fun. Similar scores in 5 tries, but must wait to play more.
