Omniture SiteCatalyst news

more LJ silliness, nothing big, but guaranteed to get a number of people in an uproar again since they're still chafing from the last time:
As always, we are providing a way for any user to opt out of contributing to the stats-gathering (even though we know it runs the risk of statistically biasing our results). If you’d like to opt out, go to the Admin Console and type "set opt_exclude_stats 1". This opt out applies to the entire implementation of Omniture -- site-schemed pages and the new inclusion of journals, profiles and communities. If you've already opted out, you don't need to do so again.
since i don't care to be involved in having my journalling experience recorded and analyzed, i have opted out.
posts about such plans should not be made in a relatively obscure group like
lj_biz but on
news. 6A/LJ continues to not learn the lessons i would really like them to learn.
ETA: promoting a link from comments for other people who're also concerned about infringement of private data. i hadn't read LJ's privacy policy in some time. *ugh*.

on 2007-09-20 01:30 (UTC)And I've opted out too.
lj_biz remains obscure to most of LJ
on 2007-09-20 02:21 (UTC)they should do this: post all such stuff to news, and turn off comments. provide and link to a parallel comment post in lj_biz. that way they can inform the LJ population as a whole, and shunt the bitching away from news (where it only pisses off people who just want to read important stuff), and it allows for commenting from those who want to get into it
i wish it were possible to have useful comment threads on such things in news, but that's not gonna happen. nobody wants to moderate something like that to keep out all the "commenting on historic thread" and cat macros and boobies and me toos.

on 2007-09-20 01:50 (UTC)auto-opt-in
on 2007-09-20 02:22 (UTC)of course if they made it opt-in, that really would bias their stats. it might not matter though; i have no idea.

on 2007-09-20 02:03 (UTC)I kind of assumed livejournal was already doing this (most other blogging sites do), but in order to the preserve the privacy of any unsuspecting livejournalers who might be reading my journal, I opted out myself and the communities I maintain.
