i heard my first pun in japanese tonight (without translator help). while that's not actually a good indication of how advanced my japanese is (it's still very basic, way below where i normally would start catching puns in a new language), it's still really cool.

i was watching video girl ai (with subtitles), and yuto tells the story of a fisherman who catches all sorts of fish with an old boot. he would catch every possible kind of fish, except for one: and here yuto said "koi", and the subtitle read "angel".

koi (こい) means both carp (鯉) and love (恋) in japanese.

i am pretty excited that i caught this.

I love catching puns in Japanese too. I bet you'd like the exhibit on Chinese symbolism in art at the SF Asian Art Museum. Sadly I don't think it plans to travel.

My Japanese is crap! I have the ten-minutes-a-day book for it, but really I have no brain after school so as far as I've gotten is putting stickers on household objects and picking up random stuff from anime. There was the cockatiel post (http://jinian.livejournal.com/272777.html), but that was an isolated incident so far.

One that was a cross language pun I caught a few sentai seasons ago... and more was a "...thud" moment as I didn't catch it till they pulled it off.

Oddball character named Vancuria, who being immortal had actually split herself into two younger girls to have, well, someone to talk to. (Yes, she was more than mildly insane). Well, one's was named Nei, the other Maire. I didn't catch the pun till one other character, offhandedly goes "Nei to Maire, " (blanking on that part.

Nightmare indeed.
