bacchus has finally found the perfect spot to doze.
saved a number of these little guys on the walk, since they all seemed to be determined to cross the driveway, and any number of roads.
some coral fungus; i am still trying to ID it because if this is the right kind, it could be choice eatin'. it just looks way cool with the backlight.
the tiniest mushrooms i've ever seen. that brown thing there is a solid 2cm of fir needle.
when we first moved out here, we were stuck by the huge maple in our landlord's front yard. we had no idea what kind it was, and the paramour, never shy with a quip, said "why, it's a bigleaf maple, of course".

yup. that's what it is actually called. and with good reason. the shiny round spot is a dime.
so i picked up this apple from under a random tree hanging over a fence, which turned out to be -- glory be! -- a winesap. alas the other half was wormy, so i tossed it with some gusto into the adjoining fallow area. it embedded itself on this rusty fence post. i couldn't have made that shot if i had tried for it.
taste-tested and found wanting by both woodpecker and beaver. so sad.
the small quarry lake.
bad composition, but i really like the gradation of evening colours.

Woolly bear! Supposedly you can tell the weather of the coming winter by the relative widths of their orange and black stripes, but (1) I don't remember how and (2) all the ones I've seen this year have had that odd longer black stripe on the end. Maybe it means more freaky weather, no surprise there.

Bigleaf maples are odd beasts. I'm still growing accustomed to them.
