not really. :)

so i have now been to my first filksing. and all i have to say is "MORE!" -- *grin*. it was great fun for several reasons:

- i have apparently missed singing with other people. i had pretty much supressed that, since the last few times it overcame me, i tried to find an outlet and wasn't successful. my local friends don't sing. my far-away friends, for the most part, also don't sing, or if they do, we don't do it together when we meet. many avenues for singing are religious, and my days in church choir are definitely over. i think of myself as not good enough to qualify for a non-religious choir, and besides that i am not really into the performance aspect of it; it's too stressful. i just want to sing for fun. i sing or hum by myself all the time, but there is a synergy in singing with others that doesn't happen when doing it alone.

- the paramour has a lovely, sonorous singing voice, but doesn't walk around the house singing either. this has got to change. we should sing together. i hope we will. we both used to play a small variety of instruments as well. we ought to resurrect that together. anyway; it was a joy to listen to that voice singing.

- while i generally don't care anywhere as much for lyrics as most other people i know (music touches something primal inside of me, lyrics require a different part of the brain, and most of the time i prefer to keep that part turned off when listening to music, because it's a more emotional experience then), amusing lyrics are fun. and oh, man, are there a lot of amusing lyrics in filk.

- while i like a broad variety of music, for singing along folk-type music has always been a favourite. so filk fulfills both the folk-heavy as well as the "almost anything goes" tendencies i have myself.

- people were incredibly welcoming to everyone, regardless of natural ability or training level. that was amazingly cool. it fits so well with my ideas about art -- that it should never be discouraged, that most of us would enjoy ourselves more and do much better if we didn't get slapped down with criticism early on. there's a place for critique, sure, critique of the constructive kind, from people who know what they are talking about, directed at people who have asked for it to hone their skills. but outside of that, i would like to see less of it, much less. this was perfect. there were people present who had very good voices, and people who played their respective instruments well, but it really impressed me that these people were not (at least not outwardly) critical of those who did less well.

it was basically the highlight of this con for me. did i mention that i want to do more?

Are you in Victoria proper? Because I know they have a choir a lot like ours, Musaic, that would probably be delighted to have you.

I'm glad you had a great time at the con.

Here's hoping your house will have walking around singing in it.

Ah, I have fond memories of filksinging in the corner at Black Friday, the grad students' end-of-semester pre-wake while the faculty meets to decide whom to eject from the program.

I went once to a filksing of some format or other at a con, and it turned out to be solo performances. Eeep run away.

Being able to sing in a group again is one of the things I'm really enjoying now that I've started going to church again. I'm lucky that it's a very welcoming group and only meets once a month, so it doesn't exacerbate Scheduling Hell too much. I'm glad you found somewhere that worked for you.

I'd like to get back into the habit of practising every day so as to improve my technique and work on my lung capacity. I used to do twenty minutes a day when I was taking singing lessons (in a group - I never took one-to-one lessons), and it made a huge difference. I got out of the habit when I became pregnant and left that group. The trick now is finding time, but I have a goal of finding a way of fitting it into my Flylady routines.

I am very glad that you came and enjoyed. We are working hard to make the filking bigger and better every year.

Also, I did want to let you know about an event that happens on the Island every spring, hosted by [livejournal.com profile] pondside (who was knitting the beautiful stole/shawl) and her husband D. Pondfilk has been an annual Filk relaxicon for 4 years now, featuring such filk GoHs as Callie Hills, Blake Hodgetts and Joe Bethancourt.
