I'm a huge fan (of course?). I'm wondering if it's very bad of me to be trying to think about whether the bottom surface, or something like it, can be made in crochet.

You mean bad like "there goes my brain for the next six months?" IME, Sheba is remarkably sanguine about the fact that she doesn't hold the trademark on the topological spaces she portrays. Might be way off, but I imagine that she'd be tickled at the thought of someone trying to adapt her work to yarn.

i agree, i think she'd be tickled at somebody doing that. there's a page on her site that shows works in wood and jade inspired by her forms. to be sure i'd just ask her if you really wanted to go for it. i've been thinking about simpler stuff since i saw the hyperbolic plane crochet, *heh*; that stuff really twanged my banjo.

It was my own sanity I was concerned about. I've been doing hyperbolic crochet since for ever (don't believe whats-their-names who are claiming they made this world-shattering breakthrough in 1997; it was so obvious to me I didn't realise one could get publications out of it). And this shape is like that, and yet not, in a way that makes me think I'll understand it a lot better if I did crochet it, the way it happened with hyperbolic planes.

I so adore her work. In fact, because of you link, I just bought my third piece. A present for Stacey. ;) I bought the milkyway glass piece. I plan to show her work to Stacey. I will add to my collection.

I never did find that lamp, though. I did find a couple of her lamp designs and one is based on a sculpture I own. I'm thinking about it.
