not a good day, because the US is seriously backsliding in regard to civil rights.
all under the premise that it is necessary to fight the bush regime's "war on terrorism". the truth about which goes further and further underground.
The President’s decision enables Rumsfeld to run the operations off the books—free from legal restrictions imposed on the C.I.A. Under current law, all C.I.A. covert activities overseas must be authorized by a Presidential finding and reported to the Senate and House intelligence committees. [...] “The Pentagon doesn’t feel obligated to report any of this to Congress,” the former high-level intelligence official said. “They don’t even call it ‘covert ops’—it’s too close to the C.I.A. phrase. In their view, it’s ‘black reconnaissance.’ They’re not even going to tell the cincs”—the regional American military commanders-in-chief.
yeah, politicos acting without accountability is such a great recipe for democratic success.
i'm not going to invoke godwin's law here, but this has been a long-standing problem for me: i could never understand how the germans didn't see what the national socialists stood for. it wasn't like they were hiding it! how could the german population possibly have believed the propaganda they got served? i now understand it a lot better because i've been watching large numbers of the US population fall for propaganda that's been outright lies, and have seen them not realize what the powers behind this regime really stand for -- because they're not hiding it either, not if one can read, follow a few web links, and put A and B together. and yet i'm pretty sure that more than 50% of the US population is gonna claim decades down the road that they "didn't know".
*bleagh*. i wish there were another planet to which me and mine could escape.
