really like the quality of the light in that one. Is that night, with an artificial light source, or day with the white balance shifted way down?

completely natural light, no white balance fiddling -- bright daylight, but the pond is well-shaded, with the occasional ray breaking through.

I am given to understand that noticing the very fortuitous conditions in light that is generally crap is how one takes really good, or at least truly memorable, pictures.

yeah, it's very much about the noticing; of light, of pattern, of texture. i have become so much more aware of things like that since i started seriously taking photographs (instead of just as documentation).

and it's fun to see the same happening to the *poing* who has also been bitten by the photography bug. we no longer take walks where one person (i) lags way beind.
