There are about 4 basic chord progressions (sequences) that almost everything in baroque and classical music is based on. One of them, and probably the most widely used, is this one. Of course, most of them time, it's mixed and matched with the others, rather than having a whole piece based almost exclusively on the one sequence. Which makes the Canon in D the canonical (teehee) example.
