so, just for fun, fantasizing, i checked out what it would cost to take the train or bus to montréal, to attend jo's farthing launch party.

C$700 for the train, one way. hahahahaha!
C$160 for the bus, one way (7 days advance purchase).

wow. one can actually go roughly 5000 km by bus for $160. that's a total bargain. it's just a wee bit more than a night at the con hotel would be. *heh*.

remembering my trip to california, which took only 36 hours instead of 80 hours, this trip would probably wring me out completely. and that's before being social for a weekend. but it would also be one of those trips to remember. and i'd get to see jo and rysmiel again, after way too long! and finally meet redbird, and janet, and hobbitbabe, and possibly other longtime online pals. *ponder*.

unfortunately, the whole trip would still come out to about C$1000.

*urk*.

It could be cheaper than that, though -- just find someone else who'd really like to go but isn't going, and get them to split a fantasy hotel room with you!

I'd be quite glad to, except my fantasy trip to the party includes [livejournal.com profile] suzimoses coming with me.

if you went, that would put the total of people who would be there who i desperately wanted to be in montreal seeing at a very very very high number.

foo!

*heh*. yes. maybe i could sleep on your floor? i have a great fantasy thermarest.

even in my fantasies i usually realize that i better have my own room if i am to spend lots of time with people otherwise. i sometimes fantasize about being more social though, and talking until late, late at night, and not waking anyone up because i snore.

oh, YOU are going to be there too?

*ack*. this is becoming really hard not to indulge in.

You could get a rail pass for a month of visiting people all over the place, but somehow I doubt you have a spare month at the moment.

Oh, we could get a room with two queen-sized beds and you could have one of the real beds, for that matter. The bit about having one's own room is more of the reason, really. But maybe my fantasy can also include me and Suzanne being more social and staying up talking late and not needing a room to hide in quite so much, too.

I do think I'm reasonably good at not being woken up by people who snore, usually. :)

oh, i could probably hack the month. just not the visiting people for that long, and not having any private space. :)

can't wait for the boat to be ready. and a democrat to be elected in the US.

Oh it would be extra special lovely if you came to the Montreal weekend.

Indulging yourself once in a while is a good thing!

I would love to meet you, but I can't offer crash space, alas.

You could ping Jo or [livejournal.com profile] rezendi: he said she might be using his apartment as overflow/crash space for the weekend, and I don't know whether that's still on, or whether it's already allocated.

How about if you stayed here?

It's about half an hour, maybe forty minutes, across town to the hotel -- ten minutes walk or five minutes bus to the metro.

We're staying in the hotel Friday and Saturday night, and other overflow people are staying at [livejournal.com profile] rezendi's, so the apartment will probably be empty, and if not, you could certainly have a bed in a room with a door that shuts, and it wouldn't cost anything at all.

Sunday night we'll be home, and also I've offered hospitality to some other people, so all I can offer would be boink-style sleeping arrangements -- probably Janet's blow-up mattress on the living room floor. (She brought it to the first WalesBoink, and it has been very useful since!) If you wanted to stay longer, you could probably have a bed again -- also if you arrived earlier.

[livejournal.com profile] hobbitbabe is coming, and [livejournal.com profile] elisem, and of the people coming you don't know, I think there are a fair proportion you'd like. I'm expecting around 40 people altogether.

Do come! It would be so nice to see you, and also so cool to do the trip that way.

Small world! Assuming that I get my act together and find someone to watch the cats, I'm going to that.

$160 to travel 3000 miles is a *very* good deal. It's about 5.3 cents per mile, which is amazingly cheap. Assuming $3.00 per gallon gas, you'd need a car that got 56 mpg to match that. (And that's completely neglecting wear and tear on the car.)

oh! OH! you are so very cool. thank you!

one night boink-style with other people would actually not only be ok, but would even rock.

and staying a couple of days longer to hang out with you and maybe see a bit of montreal would rock some more (i've never been, but i don't need anyone to show me around if y'all are worn out, which i expect you will be :). and if you've had enough of guests by then, i can also always stay in a cheap motel.

ok. it's an adventure. i'm gonna do it.

80 hours on the bus. without net access. i am certifiable. :)

*smiles*
