The middle finger is believed to be "one of the nine gates of the body through which life forces can escape and evil spirits can enter, rings are worn on the middle finger, closing the gate". (p.133, The Jewelry of Nepal)

combined with the use of the middle finger hereabouts, this makes for an interesting concept.

me too. i'm familiar with the (hindu?) idea that the orifices of the body are the nine gates, but not with this one where the middle finger is one of them.
