must see

rob paravonian's rant about pachelbel's canon in D. hilarious, especially if you've ever played in an orchestra, and generally know a little about music.

i am subscribing to paravonian's youtube feed. :)

The very first day I ever took my very first music theory class, on my very first day of college, our prof sat down at the piano, and plunked out Pachelbel's Canon. Why? Because, he said, Pachelbel's Canon was the Alphabet Song of music theory.

And then we learned the ever-infamous I-V-VI-III-IV-V-I chord progression, the first time I'd ever been introduced to chord progressions despite a lifetime of studying music. I was so impressed, hahaha, because I'd always hated Pachelbel's Canon, and now I had a legitimate reason to back up my instinctive dislike.

I laughed so very hard at this comedy routine. Utterly classic! Thank you for sharing!

ye olde music theory canon

wow, apparently music theory classes the world over use pachelbel's canon (my first one in high school did too). that's amusing.

There are about 4 basic chord progressions (sequences) that almost everything in baroque and classical music is based on. One of them, and probably the most widely used, is this one. Of course, most of them time, it's mixed and matched with the others, rather than having a whole piece based almost exclusively on the one sequence. Which makes the Canon in D the canonical (teehee) example.
