axis of evil

first there was some good news this morning: families displaced by hurricane katrina will receive debit cards good for $2,000 to spend on clothing and other immediate needs.

alas no good news can last for long.

in the very same article alaska governor frank murkowski, a republican (quelle surprise!), said he had concerns about the potential for abuse. "That's a lot of money. The question is how do you separate the needy from those who just want a $2,000 handout".

well, i tell ya, frank -- i guess it takes one to know one when it comes to abuse. you're the governor of alaska, which has just gotten itself the mother of all pork barrel projects, a $223 million bridge to an island with 50 people.

how you asshole dare to even open your big, fat, crooked mouth is beyond me. how any decent conservative can stand not to denounce you is beyond me. how any self-proclaimed christian can support people like you, oh man, i hope your god is watching.

Frank Murkowski is a Republican slime from whom I wouldn't be surprised to hear disgusting expressions of non-compassion, but even considering the source, I assume when I read that quote that "those who just want a $2000 handout" means people who didn't even live in the affected states. Do you have more context that proves that he actually means that some of the people in the shelters aren't needy enough to deserve this help?

i think that his bridge(s) (there are two, the other one isn't quite as egregious) would enable us to give a handout to pretty much anyone who puts zirself into a shelter in order to get their hands on the amazing windfall of $2000, and have plenty left over for some regular welfare queens. and you know what? i wouldn't weep. if you were one of them, i'd say "alright". i'd happily hand every unemployed person in the US $2000; it would be nothing compared to the money accumulated by those in power.

the mere idea that OMG, there will be abuse! therefore we should just let the people who clearly need help NOW jump through extra hoops and wait an extra N weeks, the mere idea shows how little compassion this slimeball has. yes, there will be abuse! of course. there is always abuse. i can't get het up about the little abusers, sorry, not when the big abuse is always perpetrated by people like him. that bridge is abuse on a grand scale. it is the equivalent of 115,000 single abusers lining up in filthy, crowded shelters to get rich off, wow, $2000 per household. pretty fucking unlikely, i'd say.

That bridge would provide handouts to an extra 100,000 families who might just accidentally be needy enough, even if a hurricane hadn't destroyed their home recently.

Sorry, I'm having so much trouble with the way the US treats its poor.
