predictions for the future

from the ladies' home journal, december 1900.

that's actually very impressive. they completely didn't expect the computer and the airplane, and they didn't dare say anything about contraception, but a lot of their expectations did come about. much of it not quite in the way they anticipated, but still. i don't think that i could do as well today.

love the preoccupation with pneumatic tubes. pneumatic tubes! i wish for them! they make my steampunky heart happy.

Lots of pneumatic tubes, but no internet. One wonders if Ted Stevens has read this.

I'm fascinated by the visions of gigantic produce.

yeah, clearly getting enough to eat was a major concern. and while they were a little off when it comes to size (strawberries the size of apples? i wish.), the consequent focus on selective breeding did give us the large (if not always tasty) veggies and fruit we have now.

it's interesting how "large" trumped "more prolific" in their imagination.

You want pneumatic tubes? Spend a day at a hospital. I am endlessly, endlessly fascinated by how the hospital simply could not function without them.

Spend a day at a hospital

this would probably not make anyone else laugh as much as i just did. :)

unfortunately i didn't get to see any pneumatic tubes. now i feel robbed, robbed i tell you!

i wonder whether they use any here. they did at the last two i worked at, which was a long time ago. loved it.

If we can come up with a way for pneumatic tubes to adequately carry burgers, fries, and drinks to the home, then they shall erump.
