conservative recommendations sought

it's time to add a couple of new inputs to my political reading list. not "news" sources, but commentary, well-informed private individuals writing about the way they see the world.

if you know of a good conservative weblog, please share it.

how do i define "good"? it needs to be populated by people who can think outside the usual boxes -- i don't want to read rightwing rantage, i want to read thoughtful posts from a predominantly conservative viewpoint. religious is ok, evangelical christian probably not, but i am willing to be surprised.

if you're not sure what i mean by thoughtful versus rantage, phrases like "morally empty appeasement weasel gerhard schroeder", and "david duke digs mother sheehan" don't indicate thoughtful posts in my world.

Hmmm.

No I don't have any to suggest, but if I may I'd like to expand my circle of political blogs as well. I'll be watching to see what other people suggest. Do you have any recommendations?

I tend to get apoplectic at any conservative site whatsoever. However, I can stand a mixed right- and left-wing blog called Obsidian Wings. I'm sorry I can't do links in comments, but if you Google for these they should come up. Another advantage of this blog for the sensitive is that, while any given comment may still make one's jaw drop (I'm not saying the same ones would make both our jaws drop, but there is jaw-dropping for everybody), there are some posting rules that keep things more civil and less loony than on a lot of blogs. Each blogger also has a short list of links they like, so finding more not-utterly-mad conservative sites might be possible by this method.

I've often found Bill Whittle's Eject! Eject! Eject! (http://www.ejectejecteject.com/) to be worth my while. Check him out and see what you think.

Take a look at [livejournal.com profile] alanesq and see how well he fits what you are looking for...

American conservatives okay? Try Andrew Sullivan's blog (http://www.andrewsullivan.com/). He's conservative and openly homosexual, which has lead to some rather sad posts in the past -- he left the Republican party in a big way last year when he finally twigged that Bush was happy to sell GLBT Republicans up the river for votes. Also, Dan Savage posts there. I should pay lots more attention than they did.

I have what is apparently a completely erroneous impression that I read a lot of conservative blogs; when I checked my bookmark list for some of them, I was hard pressed to find anything really conservative.

However, cut on the bias qualifies, and I think Damian Penny's blog might, along with Winds of Change.

And then I have a long list of sites that are written by Jews and are mostly conservative, but their political entries are all about Israel (even when they're not Israelis).

I second the recommendation of Andrew Sullivan's weblog (http://www.andrewsullivan.com/). Perhaps Catallarchy (http://www.catallarchy.net/blog/) also.

I think you saw my mention of [livejournal.com profile] balloon_juice in somebody else's blog.
And though I haven't looked at the site in ages, I used to be a regular reader over at http://www.theamericanmind.com/ (whom I met at BloggerCon)

Victor Davis Hanson (http://victorhanson.com/index.html) is an brilliant scholar and essayist. (Look at the list of the books he's written for one thing.) Jeff Jarvis of Buzzmachine (http://www.buzzmachine.com/) is actually a liberal, it's just that he was there at Ground Zero on 9/11 and tends to be pro-war as a result (his focus is on the effect of politics etc on the media, eg, Howard Stern). The Belmont Club (http://fallbackbelmont.blogspot.com/) features incisive military commentary.

I don't know if you read the Iraqi blogs? A Free Iraqi (http://afreeiraqi.blogspot.com) just went on hiatus but has an archive ("I was not living before the 9th of April and now I am, so let me speak!") Also Iraq the Model (http://iraqthemodel.blogspot.com/) is good for a unfiltered view of the situation, for example the August 9th post with photos of Iraqi women demonstrating for equality (http://iraqthemodel.blogspot.com/2005/08/and-protests-for-civil-constitution.html). The blogroll at Iraq the Model is worth exploring also.
