piranhathe SSA has removed its requirement for surgical reassignment surgery as a prerequisite for changing your gender identification in SSA records. not only that, but all it takes is a letter from your doctor that you have taken the steps necessary for you to transition -- and it's not specified what those steps should be.
doctors are still gatekeepers, which i am not happy about, but the new rules are very relaxed compared to the old ones: https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110212200
this is tremendous. i've been upset with the obama administration on so many fronts, but this is a lot more than i would have expected from them.
