nice walk at morrell nature sanctuary. the trilliums are in bloom, and the bleeding hearts are just starting. 1.26 km, 1.46 hrs -- i don't think time is meaningful since we're caching on those walks, *snicker*.

3 caches, GCFBCB [Raining Cats N' Dogs], GCH442 [Bananaslug Rock] -- coords were way off on this one, by ~40m), GCT8HZ [Rocky Knoll Stroll].

maybe that's all you can expect when you buy a cabin for $5000.

bought some hardware to build the tree bed. simpson strong-tie rules. i think i'll build my loft bed with their stuff too. if it's good enough for rafters, it's good enough to overbuild my bed.

walked in nanaimo river regional park, but i forgot to wear my forerunner, so i need to look up the distance tomorrow.

walked at morrell nature sanctuary, 1.5 hours, 4 km.

once again, from butchart garden's japanese section. it's raining again today, so it seems appropriate. alas it also reminds me of how annoying i find this habit of tossing coins in every bit of water. at least at butchart they remove them now and then so they don't continuously poison the environment. fountains are for throwing coins if one is actually superstitious, not streams.

walklog: southgate mall -> bold knight -> chase river estuary (the bluff side).

we picked up a book haul, and had early dinner at smitty's before walking. now we're back to rain rain rain.

black magic, germany 1997.

the paramour's early morning flight from our airport was cancelled, because the red-eye last night couldn't land due to fog, so there was no plane. we had to leave even earlier to drive down to victoria, to catch the flight he was originally going to connect to in vancouver. made that one easily, despite there being loads of fog across the malahat.

afterwards i went downtown to buy new boots at MEC, and to wander around a little and look at what they're doing in chinatown (ripping down lots of old buildings except they're leaving the fa├žades intact).

then i went to butchart gardens for a couple of hours. took the usual cactusload of pictures, and enjoyed myself -- it wasn't very busy, and i think i only got 3-4 pictures with people to be edited out, even in the japanese garden. the roses are way past their prime, but i still got a few good ones like this aptly named specimen. and then home, where i am waiting for the paramour to call and tell me the plane didn't crash on landing.

walklog: probably 6 km or so.

We just wanted to choose a really large number. one can't make this shit up. here's a tip: give money to the FDIC. at least they have actual numbers.

walklog:

9-25 it rained, but we actually walked, after i took the paramour to dinner at southgate since tomorrow zie's flying off for ~3 weeks. we walked maybe 1.5 km downtown, around the new conference centre, up and down commercial st. there are no stores in the centre yet, but conferences are running already. a violinist played quite nicely while we walked up comm st, but just when i was going to go and donate a few bucks because hey, drizzle, dark, and no pedestrians but us, she yelled at us across the street "praise the lord", and... *sigh*. i didn't feel like it anymore.

walklog:

9-11 long mailbox loop, 2.45 km. early in the morning for a change, which was nice, though i was insomnia-tired.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

the obligatory monthly cat picture -- bacchus, persis, shadow. :)

walklog:

9-09 long mailbox loop, 2.45 km. (yeah, i know; again. this sleeping during the day business is pants.).

i'd rather not think of crucifixion when walking on a sunny day. but hey, it's also mildly amusing. just that of all the many symbolic meanings a cross has, this is the one that rules the noodscape. which yeah, annoys me.

walklog:

9-06 long mailbox loop, 2.45 km. and then my lovely and wonderful paramour went to get us subs so i didn't have to cook anything.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

foamflower (tiarella cordifolia 'oakleaf').

walklog:

9-05 long mailbox loop. and i got the gaillardia i was talking about; it's got lovely slightly muted tangerine-orange flowers with a deeper eye, each petal tipped with yellow.

did more cleaning up in my room; have cleared out the workbench in front of the pantry shelves, and am in the process of cleaning the pantry, reorganizing the shelves, and refilling some flours that were still in bags into more permanent (and airtight) containers. (yes, part of our pantry is in my room, since the pantry in the kitchen is paltry, *grin*.)

since i've only been out during late evening the last few days, i've not been taking any new pictures. this is from a time we went to port alberni, which has some cool statues at the port.

walklog:

9-02 long mailbox loop x 2 (!!!), 4.9 km -- first time we've done that; i just felt like walking a bit more after we'd done the first loop. i am in such better shape now than i was a year ago; i can walk this loop twice, hardly slow down on the uphills, and even carry on a conversation. still sorta aiming for mt benson, but it's not a definite goal (because that would totally jinx it; i'd sprain my ankle or something :).
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

figwort, (scrophularia) -- not sure which, since this started with a wild seedling. it's very tall (to 160 cm), the flowers are tiny (5-8 mm), it seeds out gazillions. i dislike the smell of the foliage, but the bees (especially mason bees) love it, so i keep letting a couple of plants live every year.

walklog:

9-01 long mailbox loop, 2.45 km. same as same as -- i am spending almost all my free time reading, but at least i do go for this short daily walk.

minor drama )

oh, and i hope all of you who went had a great time at farthingparty. i thought of you!
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)
8 months of pictures. wow. i never thought i'd do it this long.

(lathyrus sylvestris).

walklog:

8-31 long mailbox plus, 2.5 km -- same as yesterday; timid came with us in the direction that's bad for her, so we went back and did the loop the other way around.

i want to eat something yummy.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

walklog:

8-30 long mailbox plus, 2.5 km. timid came galloping across the (dog-owning) neighbour's yard and jumped his chainlink fence to mreep at us loudly and repeatedly, and started coming along. since we don't like the cats to come along in that direction because of traffic, we turned around and shook her off. i have no idea why she was so vocal. she wouldn't come close either. on the way back we walked along that stretch of road, and she was waiting and came back home with us.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

common tansy (tanacetum vulgare). not native to BC, classified as a noxious weed in some regions. it's all over the place here.

walklog:

8-29 long mailbox loop, 2.45 km. obligation walk; didn't even take the camera. at least i went outside, eh. it was lovely today; cool and with a strong breeze, but i slept most of it away because i am in night owl mode again. *feh*.

nuts

Aug. 28th, 2008 21:29
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

hazelnut (corylus avellana) probably; not native in BC (but grown commercially in the fraser valley). i like the involucre on these better than on the native beaked hazel (corylus cornuta), because it is nicely cut and leaves the nut showing. it'll look even better once the nuts are brown.

walklog:

8-28 long mailbox walk, 2.45 km. at least i got my lazy butt outside today because it did not start raining the moment i set foot outside. yay. also, got part of my book shipment from chapters (yay, books!), which means i'll disappear right away into my room again. will document the haul when the rest of the order arrives.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

i don't think anyone will be able to guess what this is (it's slightly gross).

walklog:

8-22 long mailbox walk, 2.45 km, 0:41.

nothing even vaguely exciting happened today.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

the joy of looking at plants at canadian tire is that they're ever so informatively labelled: cactus, succulent, tropical foliage, fern. i'm guessing this is a pachyphytum.

walklog:

8-21 short mailbox walk, 2 km.

lots of errands today: canadian tire for an umbrella dryer, london drugs for a video card for the paramour, wholesale store for some groceries and memory foam mattress pads (unsuccessful, not in stock in the size we need), food country for the eggs i forgot at the wholesale store, and a couple plants that needed rescue (a gaillardia and an amazingly sunset-coloured echinacea).

when i got back home, the power was out, and stayed out for a while.

and now i have fresh sourdough bread, brie, and cherries. and ebooks to read before i sleep.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

terrible picture, quality-wise, and i had to doctor it to get to this level -- the barn was dark, and there's never room for a tripod so i didn't bring one. but the airplane ears were so awesome, i have to show it. (i also took a couple of headbutting pics, which came out equally bad.) young goats are some of my favourite animals.

walklog:

8-18 short mailbox walk, and puttering around the neighbour's yard and the lower pad to take pictures of weeds and rescue a few douglas-fir seedlings. 2km or so.

the heatwave is breaking, and it's looking like rain. i actually did a fair bit of work in my room; sorting out recyclables, putting a load in the truck to take to the depot tomorrow.
piranha: stylized white figure lifting a red barbell with weights (Default)

chocolate, beer, and draft horses -- love 'em all.

every year at the fair i want to do something with horses again; it's been too long.

walklog:

8-17 VIEX ~ 5km. man, we keep breaking heat records. it was more humid today than yesterday, so it felt hotter. luckily i see the forecast has the heatwave break and bring us rain next week.

when i walked in, the "songbird" contest had started, which i usually avoid because it features too many teenage girls with shrill voices who don't quite hit the required pitch at all times. but this time there was a young person singing elton john's crocodile rock and did a great interpretation of it, with a strong, clear voice. i sat through all 6 songs. turns out he was last year's 14-yr old winner. wow. impressive voice.

the fair seemed to have fewer animals than last time i went, but more heritage crafts -- a mr hillmark had some gorgeous small boats on display, and there's apparently a new needlecrafts store in town, and there were several people spinning (oh, i saw the most excellent wheel -- a fold-up travel wheel from ashford -- want).

i collected information from the weavers & spinners guild, the photography club, and the local hobby club of which we were members a couple years ago; i want to get back into doing more lapidary, want to pick up silversmithing, and they now do pottery as well. we'll see how much of this i'll follow up on, *snrk*, but at least the mind was willing today.
