LOST

i just finished marathoning all 6 seasons of lost.

so. umm. yeah. i really did get sucked in solidly, at least for the first 3 seasons, and i couldn't really stop watching even when i suspected it would all end badly. i thought it was great to have a show that's not episodic or consisting of a few arcs, but one with a loooong arc, one planned out over several years, more akin to a novel or an epic saga than to the average tv show. but at the start of season 4 i started to think i was wrong about that, and that in fact the writers were making it up as they went along, with only a tenuous outline, if that. and now that i've watched the finale, that's how it turned out. which is disappointing, because the setup was so good, but the finale was a great, big MEH for me. mind you, at least i was forewarned by the craptastic S6E15 across the sea. hint to writers: mythology is HARD, don't take it lightly.

spoilerific musings )
my overarching question is why there are so many amateurs writing mediocre SF/fantasy for television when we have such a rich pool of really excellent literature from which to pick.
