satirists would be out of work.

the "masked avengers", a well-known montréal comedy duo, prank sarah palin by posing as french president nicolas sarkozy. she never catches on, not even when "sarkozy's" statements become quite outrageous (though she clearly does not feel entirely comfortable when he talks about the porn video).

read the transcript.

i don't blame her for not knowing french, or even the name of the premier of québec (jean charest), but not knowing the name of the prime minister (stephen harper)? of the country bordering her state rather more than russia?

did you notice how the fauxsy accent was completely not in evidence? and what's with that giddy schoolgirl tone? is that what makes her so "likeable" to her supporters? *shudder*.

"perlin noise" is a type of visual noise used by visual effects artists to increase the appearance of realism in computer graphics. (named after computer science professor ken perlin.)

"palin noise" is a type of audio noise used by republican operatives to increase the appearance of realism in the mccain campaign.

latest evidence.

a skit by québecois artists to denounce the cuts in cultural funding by the conservative government (you can turn on english subtitles, but it's absolutely delicious in french).

this item at canadian tire reminded me of the days when you could buy fake cellphones for your car.

i am so tired all the time. but i finally left the house yesterday to run some errands because the paramour was hard at work.

on the way back while flipping through radio stations, i heard the start of the "john tesh show" which apparently provides "intelligence for your life". and the teaser offered this tidbit: if you buy a non-refundable airline ticket you should not expect a refund if you change your mind later.

the daily show from 2008-09-03 rocked.

(the link goes to the canadian comedy network site, since we're blocked from viewing videos on the US site.)

knitting for psychos cracks me up. now i need to go find out who actually created them; they are very well "executed". except -- not knit, but crochet.

ETA: found her. patricia waller. lots more on her site. fantastic crafter, completely aside from the subject matter.

Now that the George W. Bush era is almost over, the world needs a place to archive the legacy of the 43rd president.

"chronicle of higher education" readers were invited to send in designs on the backs of envelopes. y'all can vote on which you like best:

i can't decide, some of them are so good; i want to vote more than once. maybe voting irregularities should be expected for this poll...

i'm dying here. so, so funny.

what is that particular structure called that's used in "the raven" (i know i can google it, but hey, it's your chance to shine if you know it; otherwise i'll just put it on the stack since i am maxed on tabs)? for some reason, even though i don't do poetry, that one always grabs me, pulls me in, and won't let me go until it's done. it seems irregular, but interestingly regular in its irregularity, if that makes sense.

a post over in brooks' LJ reminded me that i meant to post this:

couple days ago when grocery shopping (in our huge wholesale-type store), we were looking at their plants, and they had money trees. the paramour was wondering out loud why they're called that, and half-turned to the two asian-looking girls who were standing next to us to presumably consult their opinion on the matter (not because they were asian-looking, but because they were standing next to us, though now of course i am wondering what they thought about it). one of them said "i have no idea; i'll have to google that when i get home".

OMG. this isn't silicon valley, these are the fricking boonies, you know. and yet random girls in the wholesale store google.

here's the explanation for the name, sort of. it's basically a feng shui thing. what surprised me is that it's a very new tradition, only about 20 years old.

p.s. apparently the plant (pachira aquatica) is a real money tree for the taiwanese agriculture industry to the tune of about U$7 million annually (says wikipedia).

[livejournal.com profile] the_siobhan linked to this utterly hilarious piece of writing, my stomache hurt i laughed so hard. i looked around a little and found much more to like. and i'm gonna go out and buy this woman's books now. today's gmail text ad is headed:

"Over 20 brands of Ukes"

*cackle*. ok, this is only funny to those of my fellow smut lovers who know that "uke" is the japanese term for the sexually receptive male in a homosexual coupling.

(the ad continues with: "UkuleleWorld2.Com - Fully Guaranteed or Money Back Uke Strings, Picks, Parts, Music".)

the paramour is, much to zir chagrin, the beneficiary (cue appropriate quote from"harold and maude") of my plethora of snarky comments on all those social networking sites.

idea: we start an anti-social networking site. i thought we'd make it like a nice, comfy little cave, with all sorts of privacy protection, and apps that do NOT link to anyone else. but the paramour was way ahead of me: we link everyone to everyone else, and let them sort it out, making the interface as clumsy as possible. war world peace is sure to follow.

we'll call it SlapInTheFacebook.

"Read this before open."

"Could you give us your opinion?"

"ROTFLMAO, who is that your with?"
-- somebody who can spell.

"Dude, what if your wife finds this?"
-- yeah, dude, what then?

"The News you have been waiting for!"
-- never.

"Older gate of stepma was displyaed to sonn"
-- om mani padme hum.

"Enjoy new abilities of the real Man and become him!"
-- oh how i wish.
