so they pulled all of shadow's teeth, they were in such bad shape. poor catling. she was very agitated when we brought her home; clearly still confused from the anesthetic -- all she wanted was to go to ground. but we couldn't let her do that, so we spent three hours sitting with her in the egg room, keeping her from tearing herself up at the door, and calming her down bit by bit.

when she could finally walk without wobbling, we let her out, and she was fairly ok. she actually ate (liquified canned food), peed, and defecated, and everything looked normal. i kept her with me overnight, which didn't please her a whole lot, though she did settle down and purred up a storm after initially sitting and worrying a bit at the door. but she kept returning to the door, walking back and forth much of the night. i didn't sleep too well, and after i woke up again around 5 with a tach attack, that was it for sleep altogether.

in the morning she wanted to eat, but wouldn't touch any food, *sigh*. the paramour went out and got various cans of differing food, and when i mixed the IAMS chicken with some half-and-half and warmed it up, she first licked up all the liquid and then actually ate a bunch of the little chicken bits.

alright. so maybe she's still afraid of food, since it hurt her so much lately. also, the pain killer has probably worn off. i'm waiting for her to want more food so i can dose her with metacam.

so there's definitely something wrong with shadow's mouth. i separated her from the others by feeding her warm wet food in the egg room with the door closed. she started digging in with gusto, but then she behaved like a lump of catfood had bitten her; she jumped back from it, and then pawed it carefully while keeping a distance, and licked food off her paw. after that happened a couple of times, she wouldn't go back to the same bowl and instead prowled the others to lick them.

ok, i am human, we have big brains. today i pureed the cat food in the food processor with enough water (and some cream) to make it liquid. now she can lick it all. i also warmed it up a bit. that seems to work well; she lapped up about half of what we started with, ca 80g of the can. we shall repeat that later today, whenever she shows signs of being hungry again.

my doctor's visit went ... weird. totally not what i had expected and stressed over -- new doctors IME like to do a lot of prodding, testing, and going over my history. but doctor O. was all smiles, let me give two sentences of how the heart problems started and where i was now, looked at my latest data (which i always neatly print in graph form), pronounced it great, and invited me to come back soon for a whole physical and so we could get to know each other better -- and then she wrote me a prescription for a year's worth of meds and said goodbye. shortest visit i've ever had. but at least i have meds now and don't have to go back just to have them filled (i guess she doesn't believe in that policy; i actually think it's annoying but also good for people like me). if only she knew how likely i am to get myself back for a physical...

mangy-cat wants to be #7. the rest of the mischpoke doesn't seem to mind.

it's about time for another gratuitous underexposed cat belly picture. also, because it is the paramour's birthday today, and i took zir to dinner instead of poring over today's images. :)

so i am hungry, and looking for some quick chow. got a package of thai ginger noodles, and to stretch that a little, think to toss in some mushrooms. on the tv is some ad abusing edit piaf's memory. she's singing "je ne regrette rien" and when she gets to "oublié" [1], i sink the can opener into the can of mushrooms and start to crank it. *plop*plop*plop*, three cats jump from their resting spots and miaow around my feet in the kitchen.

it's been months since i opened anything good (tuna). but they've not forgotten.

[1] for those who don't speak french, "oublié" means "forgotten".

a couple of days ago we had two consecutive nights of frost, the first frost of the year, and that drove all the cats inside. all of them! and without altercations! shadow, cal, and persis slept on the couch, bang on the top of the cage, bacchus on the paramour's chair, and timid on the sleeping bag in my room. it was way cute. i had to relocate bacchus to the desk so i could sit somewhere myself. :)

so i didn't take the little stray calico to the SPCA yesterday because they're closed on mondays. i've got the carrier ready now, though, and it's time to go.

and i am dragging my feet. she's become so affectionate, and so attached to me -- she's always right next to me when i am in my room, and she gets up and runs towards the door when i return. oh, and notice, she's got a gendered pronoun now. *snrk*. earlier she climbed onto my back and sat on my shoulder, purring into my ear, like a little familiar. i feel like i am betraying her trust by dumping her at the SPCA.

yes, somebody will surely adopt her, and give her a happier home than we can. it will all be for the better. but still.

*arrgh*. i get so damn quickly attached to animals.

and i am at the edge of tears. stupid SSRI -- that's something it really had under control.

but it's adopted me.

from stray and several-arms-lengths cautious to starved for affection and wanting it all the time, in 24 hours. i've finally convinced it to not walk, sit, or lie on my keyboard. it sat in the out-papertray of my printer for a while, because that was the closest it could get. now it's back in the box. whenever i move it looks up and mreeps. when i get up, it gets up and weaves around my legs. when i go out the door (the bottom of which i am now keeping closed to restrict the other cats from coming in here through the house), it sits down and stares after me. when i come back there is lots of excited mreeping, and it actually vibrates when i pet it. and if it got its will, i'd be petting it all the time -- we've had several lengthy sessions, and so far i've always got enough before it has. like it's making up for getting none at all during its first few months of life. poor thing.

the battle for hearts and minds would be won already if we did not Have Too Many Cats. i am a total pushover.

at least it won't be a problem to put it in the carrier on monday. i hadn't looked forward to that and planned to go the bribery route, but it lets me pick it up without fuss now.
piranha: red origami crane (Default)
so for the last week i've been chatting with the little stray calico kitten that has decided to live in our attic -- me sitting in my room typing away, while it sits at the top of the ladder, staring down. and it's been gradually getting less spooked by my presence. a couple of days ago i started to put feed for it at the bottom of the ladder. earlier today it let me touch it for the first time. and for the last hour it's been slinking around my legs, purring its little heart out and begging to be petted. i just made a little box for it with polarfleece bedding and put that next to my chair, and it's already in it -- that polarfleece gets them every time. :)

it has a strange-looking head -- half is black and the other half is red, while most of the face is white. maybe tomorrow i'll get some pictures during daylight hours, though it tends to stay hidden then. it is very skinny, but not dangerously so.

unfortunately, all of our cats dislike it -- as opposed to persis whom shadow and bacchus never minded at all. this one even shadow chases, and persis hisses at it. so it might not find a lot of peace in the box once i've gone to bed.

monday it's off to the humane society. at least this one isn't sick, just skinny. and being young and a calico make it pretty adoptable.

it does always touch my heart when a stray decides to trust me. food goes a long way, but there's more to it than that.

i'm falling behind again.

it's hard to write when i am so busy. i've managed to keep cooking and doing chores, and even added some work back into the mix. also have been riding the bikes. and, the paramour and i went to meet an old friend in vancouver, and stayed for an extra day to go to the acquarium. i have lots of pictures which need webbifying. will write about that trip separately once i've done that.

the paramour left yesterday for 2 weeks with the folks back in ontario. that trip started well, with a quick trip down to the harbour to catch one of the seaplanes -- there are 3 different companies flying out of nanaimo to vancouver now. the one jill flew on is no more, but a new one has replaced it, and that's the one with which we booked. after seeing the paramour off, i went to buy tomato plants, and woops, a tiny lilac shrub jumped into my cart! syringa meyeri 'palibin' is a korean dwarf. i looked for it the last couple of years everywhere but couldn't find one. it will grow only to 6 ft maximum, and its other advantage is that, if pruned well, it'll offer a second bloom in late summer. yeah, i know, it'll still be too big for the boat, but i can always donate it to P&G. it smells wonderful. i have it inside right now, in my room.

the good news ended when i got home. the neighbour's son had mowed the lawn and apparently forgotten that it's a bad idea to ride the mower down the driveway with the blades going. it had kicked a stone right into the sliding glass door, shattering it. i spent a couple of hours cleaning all the glass out of the carpet and outside. caught the cats and checked their paws too, since this is where they go in and out of the house. nobody seems hurt, though i haven't managed to catch bang yet.

then the paramour called, and the rental car company was not answering their phones. ended up having to take a hotel room. fuckers.

it got cold last night and i berated myself for not putting some plastic over the missing door. and then, just after 1:00 in the morning i heard loud meowing which didn't sound like any of our cats. indeed, the non-existing door had apparently attracted a tan-and-white kitten who looked emaciated and sick. *sigh*. i tried to convince her to go outside, but she ended up hiding on the shelf unit in my room, behind the cookbooks. ok, fine. too late to do anything much. i chatted with her for a while, so she'd let me look at her. at first i thought she was blind in one eye, but it turned out to be all pus, and the eye is probably fine. both eyes were crusted with fluid. i tried to clean it up, but she would have very little of it, so i just gave her some wet food and convinced her that she was safe by keeping all the other cats away. in the end i put her in bacchus's cage with food and water, so contact between her and the others would be minimal. after meowing for a good while, she finally settled down and we all went to sleep.

this morning i called the SPCA, which was of course closed. they gave me the emergency number for the animal control officer on duty, who told me that they really shouldn't take a cat from outside the city -- apparently there is an ordinance that they have to take dogs, but nothing about cats. i convinced him that this one was sick enough to merit an exception, and i said that i'd drive her to the pound myself. which i did; she gave me no trouble going into the carrier. *whew*. glad she wasn't a feral. with two people cleaning her up it wasn't quite as difficult, and it did indeed look as if her eye can be saved. i left her in good hands.

when i got home, i was worn out already. i vegetated for a while, and finally managed to put plastic up over the door, though of course i waited until it started raining, *rolls eyes at self*. so tonight no stray cats can wander inside, and i am not freezing.

i am working on modelling "visemes" - visible mouth movements that look like somewhat realistic speech.

who should be missing the cats by now, even if not the cat dander. :)

timid close up timid close up

she is so beautiful; i could look at her forever (if she sat still long enough, *heh*).
a little washing action a little washing action

cal's got her eyes closed, she enjoys it that much.
persis and timid persis and timid

this is the pad i made on the paramour's desk, to the right of my laptop -- it is pretty much always occupied by one, or if friendly, two cats. this is the first time i've seen timid and persis so close together.

i'm really happy everyone is getting along so well with persis. last night even bang did not hiss at her when they were both on my bed for their before-sleep cuddle. bacchus has also not been at cal for a couple of weeks now -- i think it helps that i am in here pretty much all day long, and i spend time playing with him whenever he gets into the mood. so cal has had opportunity to get more comfortable without being chased.

so my cunning plan for regular, say, weekly LJ updates while i am in monomaniacal work mode is not working. i shall have to endeavour to devise a better plan. other than communication with fellow human beings i am doing great; i even fought off a cold; it got stuck in my throat for a mere 5 days (which was unpleasant, sure, but better than if it had marched on into my sinuses and head). still working all day, every day, and having a blast. this is the longest work streak i've had in years, and i am so happy about it.

in the meantime, i offer some cat pictures to make up for my absence. i finally got some nice shots of persis -- black cats are very hard to photograph. she's settled in completely -- i'll never figure out cat hierarchies; she is the smallest and youngest (albeit no longer a kitten), but she isn't afraid of any of the others; she even chases bacchus when it pleases her. she's getting along with all of them decently; just last week her and cal slept together on the same spot for the first time. only bang remains a little stand-offish, but he no longer hisses everytime he sees her. she sleeps more than the others, but when she's awake, she is also more curious (and less fearful). her favourite sleeping place appears to be on top of the paramour or myself when we are sleeping. she really is like a little familiar -- maybe i should try and get her to ride on my shoulder, *snicker*. she's also started to play; the old shoelace does its magic for this cat as well. cheapest toy ever!

the little black cat has a name: persis, short for "persistence".

now to make a vet appointment.

there's bang.

and i am at 1,451 books catalogued. today was a bit slow going because what little japanese manga i have is a bitch to get entered.

and here's the bang picture )
piranha: red origami crane (Default)
i have no idea. things must have happened, because i feel accomplished, but i probably waited with this entry too long, past the time when i should have gone to bed (hey, 1384 books catalogued, *heh*) -- brain is mush.

the paramour was sick today, so there has got to be a special cat picture here. )
