*nod*. i enjoy grammatical patterns, and once i have a firm grounding in a language i will soak up the finer nuances of grammar from exposure, but it turns out that it really slows me down if i am not taught the basic patterns right away. like for you this fits with my general learning style.

i need to read more by people who say they don't need that, because i don't know anyone who is conversational in a language who hasn't learned some grammar explicitly. everyone i've met who claims they abhor grammar and don't need to learn it isn't actually conversational, they just have some gamification badges from sites who declare you 34% fluent when you know 250 words, and those not even well (that's my current state on duolingo in french, and it strikes me as hilarious). knowing vocabulary does not translate to fluency -- i actually know a lot more words (cognates), but i still suck at conversation because i've never yet practiced it enough.
